1964 Haut Brion
I was born 60 years ago today, and to celebrate the day I opened my last bottle of 1964 Haut Brion along with a Flannery NY strip. Luckily it was a sound bottle with decent color (brick red with a clear rim). Not much on the nose but fine flavors in the mouth, with red fruit, some tannins still left...

Re: Next Spring: 25th anniversary celebrations in France and Washington DC.
Personally I have no interest in a France BWE trip, but I would certainly be interested in getting BWE folks together in DC. The DC crew has done a great job of putting events together and its an easy place for many to get to.

Amazing evening. And two 1964s! I've never had a 1964 Comtes de Champagne but have had other great 1964 Champagnes. Certainly long in the tooth by now (along with lots of other things from 1964) but I love how Comtes de Champagne ages. And pretty nice showings from some of the greatest Bordeaux of o...

Re: President Trump
Some West Wing fan fiction I heard the other day was that this could be a long con from the Dems. If they were smart enough to make it look like a Biden/Trump rematch and then swapped in a competent but generally little known D at the end (like Whitmer) they would win easily. Just like 2016, these a...

Re: Poll: Was Robert Parker a net positive or a net negative for Bordeaux?
I voted net positive but its a tough call. I think he definitely helped the consumer, especially in the US, through the mid-90s. His palate change/decline, combined with market demand that he helped create for riper wines, contributed to loads of wines I don't much like. If I look at the evolution o...

I would add 1986 Talbot (I bought a couple for $150 recently), as well as all the usual suspects from 1988, including PLL and Las Cases. No one cares about 1988 anymore, and its great value along with 1983.

Re: The 2023 BWE DC Convention is under way!
Some late thoughts on the weekend... Friday night was a free for all as usual. I thought the most impressive wines were the Cal Cabs, with 1991 Dominus as my favorite with the 1991 Montelena and 1997 Montebello not far behind. Far more Germans than usual, with the highlight for me being the 2001 Dön...

It was great to hang out with the DC folks and drink some great wines with great people. I'll cover more later but while I had a great time talking to Marcus at length about foreign and tech policy, we do not share a palate. I thought the 2003 Latour wasn't particularly outstanding. I enjoyed the 20...

Sounds like a lot of fun and some very good wine. Lisa and I had a 1995 Pichon Baron that was finally ready to drink and I finished off the last bit of a 2001 Rieussec that was top notch while thinking about our BWE friends.

Exactly what I want in a Sauternes. Great balance, fully mature, loads of botrytis, long, intense. Drinks well now and should continue to drink well until 2030 at least. Nice. My local crunchy grocery coop somehow gets an allocation of Labet (culty Jura wine). I saw it the day it got put out. Got 7 bottles of various Chardonnay and Savagnin cuvees from 2019 and 2020. Not cheap at $80-$100 per but super tasty and I'm glad to have them.

Pepe's wines are so great. They are goofy expensive in the US but the early drinking ones like you had that don't get officially exported when in Italy is fantastic.
When we are in Italy Lisa will drink Pepe just about the exclusion of everything else regardless of region if it is available.

Thanks for the notes. I have a few of these and its always a good reminder to keep aging the big guns (LMHB and La Conseillante).
2001 LP Sautenes is incredibly good. I bought a bunch in 375 and they are as good as any but the big guns in 2001. Only 2 left.

Try Torrentes if you can find one. A fabulous hump day quaffer with a very modest price... I'm a big fan of Torrontes as a summer quaffer, but it is pretty low acid. Very floral and juicy. If you want to try Torrontes, if you make sure it is from Salto (in Argentina) and its the most recent vintage...

I'm sure the BD will come in with his judgment, but it seems to me the only way to properly atone would be to share a bottle of the 1985 Magdelaine with BWEers at some point in the future.

+1 with Jacques If you want to worry about systemic financial risk, I'd be much more worried about US government shutdowns and other black swans than bank failures, at least for the US. It's too loved to truly be an off vintage, but Lisa and I had a 2002 La Mission Haut Brion last night with our Easter lamb.
