Re: 2000 Sociando Mallet

There seems to be quite a lot of variation in this vintage and the range is very wide. I wonder if there were some bottling issues, different lots etc. I guess I got lucky as all of mine have been very good to excellent.

2014 Chateau le Puy Cuvee Emilien

For Easter dinner we opened this wine, the only one in the cellar. This is 1970's old-school merlot! Nothing out of place; acid, fruit, tannin, mineral, and earth are harmonious and complimentary. Lifting aromas of ripe, bing cherry fruit, black currant liqueur and damp loam. Silken mineral and velv...

Re: Your least favorite famous Bordeaux aoc…

I too voted St. Emilion for reasons outlined by others.....over-the-top, oak, alcohol etc. Although since 2016, my thoughts are that restraint has become the norm. Interesting that St. Julien and Paulliac received no votes. I imagine that most Bordeaux cellars are represented more heavily by these t...

A recent 2004 was lovely and ready to drink. Medium bodied, cassis and tobacco with a hint of truffle. A very elegant, classic St. Julien.

I'm telling you, 2019 Cantemerle at $28 is about as good a deal as you'll find out there. It's a property whose style I love at a very nice price. Just snuggled mine in the cellar. Plan to open one this weekend so I'll report out, but it is always a favorite of mine. Jim's palete aligns well with m...

UN POINT C'EST TOUT ! par la Pépinière Berillon

A bit of a re-post from our wine forum partners on another board, this video offers a look at how vine genetics and the reemergence of massale selections are influencing wine-making in France today. As an agronomist, I found it fascinating. We agronomists always say "it starts with the plant ma...

Re: Bordeaux 2020 Southwold Tasting at FarrVintners

I recall a similar “10-years on” sentiment with 2002. Happy to have 2014 represented in my cellar. I think the most interesting statement regarding Farr's conclusion is that tasters felt that the wines would fare better when tasted alone. Large tastings are great, but true wine appreciation begins a...

Re: Poll: Was Robert Parker a net positive or a net negative for Bordeaux?

I voted net positive. While I view Robert as a very controversial figure, he brought to light many things that plagued wine all over the world. The effect of heat on wine during transport and storage (Kermit Lynch as well, of course), ripe fruit makes good wine, the effect of TCA in the cellar, and,...

Totally fair. The ‘16 is quite good and the ‘19 better. Hope this trend holds. I have not tried the ‘20. Don’t get me wrong…. big fan…just would have liked to have seen a more risk/reward attitude toward the better past vintages where I have more experience.

I am in the camp of conservatism on this issue.....not a bad business model, I might add. While I like Lagrange and have since I began my Bordeaux journey, I do believe that consistency is prized over risk. There have been a few vintages where neighboring estates made more compelling wines. The soil...

If looking for a 2016 to nominate, the Montrose is/was amazing and very close to the 2019. Closed now, though. A very pure and persistent rendition. Personally though, the 2019 is the s**t. Reminds me of the '89 Lynch Bages upon release....haunting.

My experience with the 2005's is that they require a lot more time. A recent 2005 Malmaison was closed and undrinkable even after a double decant. I am beginning to relate this vintage to 1986 where many wines that I cellared and drank never really seemed open.
