Well, Hound, since the Right Bank is not Bordeaux, how could it possibly win BWE wine of the year? Should have as much chance as any other non-Bordeaux!

Wine Doctor goes pay for access

If you enjoy reading Chris Kissak's notes on Bordeaux and Loire wines, come March you'll have to pay for the pleasure.

Re: Phelan Segur 2009

The back-end heat kinda reminds me of some Zins I've had. I too was wondering about St. Estephe, Chasse. Being the most northerly commune, I thought it might be affected less by the heat than the more southerly appellations, and therefore thought they might be producing a wine with a crisper palate....

Phelan Segur 2009

It was bothering me that so many wine critics were comparing the 09 vintage to Napa. I used to drink a lot of CA cabs at one time (still drink some), and so far the 09s didn't really remind me of them, although the vintage is clearly a ripe one. This evening that changed. I have to say that the 09 P...

Re: Seeking advice on "old school" producers in BDX

Here's what Neal Martin wrote about the 2009 Ch. Cantemerle: Tasted at a negociant. The Cantemerle '09 has a well defined, quite pure nose that shows more precision and essence of terroir than the Camensac sampled alongside. A very nice marriage between exuberant ripe, rounded fruit and Bordeaux aus...

Jim, have you -- or anyone else for that matter -- checked in on the 03 SM? How does it stand up to the 05?

Okay, just came across Blanquito's review from a year ago:

Anyone try it since?

05s coming out of hibernation, you say. I haven't tried an 05 in quite some time. Not too tannic? All, some, or just Sociando? Might just be the time to compare the 05s with the 09s, in an A/B sort of way that is. :-)

09 Cantemerle anyone

Saw the folks at my local wine store unloading a couple cases of the 09 Cantemerle, which made me realize no one seems to be drinking it or talking about it this year. Checking with the pros only makes me wonder more: Jancis Robinson says it's too green and austere, while the lawyer from Maryland sa...

I think when experienced tasters like Tooch express their lack of tasting experience, it really is a sign of the degree to which this vintage is throwing people for a loop! I too will be taking a wait and see approach, and will not be pre-ordering anything. On her web page Jane Anson has expressed s...

I found his ranking, David. Forgot he had 2000 in the #2 spot, 08 in #3: 2005, 2000, 2008, 2009, 2001, 2006, 2002, 2004, 2010, 2007, 2003

I really hope he's right about 08, if for no other reason, they're affordable. :-)

David, I've seen his ranking of the vintages of the past decade. If I remember correctly he ranks 05 first, followed by 08. 09 is further down the pack, and he's got 2010 near the end.

Hard to know about Mr. Gilman's motives, Pom. It is possible to be completely sincere, and yet deliver your message in such a way as to attract a lot of attention. Scoring the '09 Cos d'Estournal at 68 (or whatever it was he gave the wine) is certainly one way of attracting a lot of attention while ...

Thanks Pomilion. Sounds like a great time -- great approach to tasting by the way. Interesting that you prefer lots of '09s to '10s. 08 was the last year I bought PLL; '09 is nuts, '10 nuttier. Looks like Haut Bergey is on a roll; nice '09 and now a nice '10 too.

D'Armailhac 2009

Another wine with a deep red colour, although not quite as black as the Duhart. Nice aromatics: crushed stone, hint of menthol, violets, anise, as well as the family of darker berries. This is a somewhat lighter, crisper wine than the Duhart. Not quite as rich, but still very nice. In fact, I can se...

Anyone tried the 09 yet?

Holy cow, this stuff is drop dead gorgeous. Like so many of these 09s, it's got a really deep black-red colour in the glass. You can smell the graphite on the nose, along with licorice, bramble, vanilla, a little hazel nut. It is a beautiful viscous mouth feel, as silky as a set of fine sheets. Rich...

I was on the same wave length as the gracious Comte when I started this thread. Bdx is traditionally pretty awkward from 5 - 10 yrs of age. Aging Red Bdx

In a new on-line column, Matt Kramer, writer for the Wine Spectator, maintains that red Bdx no longer needs to be aged the way it once did. Most will reach their peak, or get most of the way there, in about 5 yrs, maybe 10 in some cases. Comparing today's Bdx with that of 20 yrs ago Kramer writes: &...

There usually isn't a problem getting to taste what ever you want at these sorts of events here. As for food, they usually have hind quarters of beef on ...
