If 98R is great, just wondering about 98L? I take it it isn't as good as the right side, but is it horrible. If I can get a few bottles of 98 GPL cheap, is it worth it?

I like the 05 Haut Bailly too -- have most of a case. And I agree that 05 was good to Pessac: SHL and DomChev also worth the price of admission. Has anyone taken a look at St Estephe north? Is it not true that they're normally less gooey/sweet, if not down right hard as nails: Sociando, Calon Segur,...

Since it's parkerized, thought it would be interesting to see what HE had to say about it: "Sweet, toasty, oaky notes interwoven with hints of black olives, blackberries, cassis, and spice box are found in this densely saturated ruby/purple-hued 2005. While rich, with impressive concentration a...

Re: Meanwhile, the 2005 Haut Bergey is drinking well

I believe you, Hound. My experience so far with the tannin levels of 05 is that they are at variable stages of development. For example, and as I've already written, I found the 05 Lafon Rochet to be so tannic it couldn't be drunk. The Camensac wasn't as bad, but tough enough and clearly needs time....

Polish, Russian?! Socialism, Communism, Terrorism!? We don't need to make such overly fine distinctions. They just get in the way of thruthiness. Anyway you look at it, it's all just more Euro-badness! ;) You keep thinking like that, Jim, and we'll make you an honourary Canadian. :P

That article is actually one of a series of articles on the MAN, mostly as a sort of tribute I think; and it helps to read them all. The author does recognize that there may be all sorts of factors influencing the change in Parker's pointing, but I still find the observation of the change to be an i...

Re: Meanwhile, the 2005 Haut Bergey is drinking well

I think 6 years is just not enough time to really evaluate the vintage. But I gotta admit, I'm loving those 05 Margaux -- so hedonistic. But we have to stop calling them gooey or syrupy. I used to drink a lot of Cali Cabs and Aussie Shiraz. Now that stuff is syrupy, esp. the aussie shiraz. From that...

Re: Meanwhile, the 2005 Haut Bergey is drinking well

May be a specific wine thing, David. I've had some 05s that were quite approachable (Issan, Giscours), but I've also had some so tannic they were undrinkable (eg. Lafon Rochet). I found the 05 Haut Bergey I had some 8 months ago to be tighter than the one Hound just drank, but that was 8 or so month...

I tried the 05 DdC about 6 or 8 months ago. It seemed a little more open then than what Robert discribes. I also think it'll go the distance. But it is a very different wine from the 04 SHL. I agree with the iron, by the way, and a fair bit of it.

For me a lot of 03s has either too much caramel/praline/raisin type flavours (Clerc Milon), or are a little to flaccid (Smith Haut Lafitte). This isn't true for all 03s of c...

While many critics are obviously big on 09, there have been a few cautionary voices. According to John Gilman, for example, it is inconsistant and buyers need to be selective. He also warns it might not be the vintage for those who prefer their Bdx "old school": "But 2009 is emphatica...

And according to what I've read, Jim, 2010 will take longer than 2009 to come around. 2010 may bests be left to those under 40, rich under 40s that is. There are a few chateaux that lowered their 2010 price from their 2009. If I recall correctly, Cos d'Estournel and Ducru Beaucaillou are amongst the...
