Wow, Hound! I, for one, eagerly await the definitive opinion on 2008. I was wondering, Chris, if you might re-taste that cast of miscreant Pauillacs at some time? I noticed that you tasted all the ones I mentioned in my earlier posting last fall. Is it possible that since they were all the sam...

Re: Whither 2008?

I'm cool, Claudius. Just looking for something to chat about I guess. And I agree about sourcing a variety of vintages. There are times I want a fuller bodied wine, but there are also times I prefer something less tarted up. I have plenty of 04s -- a vintage I like a lot -- and even some 06s, to bal...

Re: TN: wines this past week

Interesting mix of wines, Harry. I've had a number of vintages of the Balmoral, and it is certainly more restrained than what we normally think of aussie shiraz. That, I suppose, is why they call it Syrah. That same Decanter magazine that expressed disappointment with Bdx 08 is forecasting increased...

I don't mean to start a war or words either, ChVin -- just reporting on what others are saying about 08 and seeing what the members of this board think about these "professional" judgments. I didn't write "wither," Claudius, but "whither." Mind you, they make a pretty g...

Whither 2008?

Increasingly I find myself concerned about 2008. Early enthusiasm for the vintage is continually being rolled back. We all know that the Forever Nameless has retreated from his early high scores for the vintage. Then Chris Kissack backed off many of his original scores, even of many of the higher pr...

He he he -- popped one of these yesterday just to try. You're right RG, very nice indeed; and certainly more traditional than the '05. Moreover, it has clearly improved on day 2, suggesting to me it can stay in bottle a little longer -- and absolutely stunning with a top sirloin steak, 'shrooms, and...

Simmer down, as John Stuart might say. :D You're not the only one who likes this wine in this vintage. A couple of years back some dude on CT wrote: "This wine was drank in serious company. It was blind with 5 firsts and other very pricy Bdx neigbors and it won WOTN. This wine was seriously sho...

Good to hear you're tacking left. I tried the HBL about a year and a half or two years ago. What I remember most is the tight tannins, especially on the back end. As I recall, it was also quite dry. I didn't buy any more, but I don't doubt it will even out.

Jim, I'm normally very reserved when it comes to predicting what someone may or may not like, but after reading what you have to say about wine over the past year or so, I should think you would appreciate DomChev. I'd say it fits the category of a traditional Grave wine. I've had the 04, 05, 06 and...

Are you buying the '09s blind, Jim? As far as I know -- those over in Europe will know better, of course -- DomChev is a long time Grave estate. And it normally gets a good response. A fellow BWEer likes it quite a bit:

Chateau Vin, I didn't recommend any particular wines because I haven't yet tasted a single '08. Indeed, where I live they are only now starting to appear on the store shelves. I reread Jancis Robinson's comments on this wine. She tasted it twice, once in 06 and then again in 09, and on both occasions complained that it had no nose. Well how things have changed. As soon as I pulled the cork a huge nose of sweet berries filled the dining room. Who needs to drink a wine when...

Our local liquor stores -- government run and mandated to serve the people of the province! -- have been out of Lafite products since they sold them all off to Chinese interests more than a year ago. I don't use CT that way Hound. In fact, if you were to decide which wines to buy based on CT averages, you'd be no further ahead since almost anything that receives more than a dozen entries ends up with an average of somewhere between 89-91! What good is that? I'm more inclined to use CT to see how...

Obvious bricking as one would expect of 26 year old Bdx. Lots of aged green elements on the nose -- bell pepper, tobacco, little tea leaf, some red fruit in behind. Lovely mouth feel, soft and silky. Tannins well integrated. Lots of green pepper on the palette; tobacco and dry leaf, touch of leather...

If you have concerns with the 98 aussies, Claudius, what about the 03s? Wasn't that the year of the great fires? And speaking of aussie wines, have you tried Castagna's wines?

If you have these, Claudius, don't sell them off. This is a lovely wine, even at 8 yrs of age. Dark garnet red in the glass, not black or dark purple as some have reported, at least not with a clean sheet of white paper behind the glass in good daylight. Slightly paler meniscus. Classic Pauillac nos...
