Continuing Saga of 2010
Reaction to the 2010 vintage continues to surprise. As we all know, it was hyped as the vintage of the decade, nay, century! However, as I pointed out in a previous posting, JR downgraded it significantly. A recent blind tasting of the wines of the Medoc appearing in Decanter magazine seems to reaff...

I have no idea what to make of her, Jim. When her star first began to rise I was glad to read someone who had a different take on things than RP. She seemed to prefer a more traditional claret than the Man, but it's gotten so that I simply can't figure her notes out. Her taste buds seem to be from a...

I don't know, Jim. Ms. JR doesn't share your enthusiasm for this wine:
"Very dark. Heady black cherry aromas. Very, very sweet. And alcoholic. And a bit drying on the end - a sort of right-bank Margaux. What's the point?"

2001: Initially lots of tar on the nose and palate, but that blew off/faded after a few moments. What a beautiful wine. Deep red in colour (none of the neonic purple) with a small measure of bricking. Once settled after opening the nose was really pretty: dark berries, plums, licorice, spice, some f...

Another 2010 -- those sculpted tannins!! In this case they are plentiful but oh so silky smooth and nicely sweet. This is a fine wine, not as rustic as the Sociando. But this is classic Paulliac: black current, raspberries, cassis, cedar, some dark truffle, lead pencil, you know the profile; it's al...

Maybe Clerc Milon is bargain up here by Canadian standards; only twice the price of Sociando. On the other hand, you don't want to know what Sociando costs up here!

So Jim, for those interested in the 2010 vintage, from the northern Medoc we need to get Sociando, and from the southern Medoc, Cantemerle. What of the middle? HWSRN says the '10 Clerc Milon is one of the finest he's ever tasted! True??

Surely it's a wine for Newfoundlanders, where we rough it for 12 months of the year! Not like those sissies in Quebec, who only have to rough it 11 months a year!

Bordeaux White 2010 2010 Château Bouscaut Blanc 87 Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. There is a lot of oak on the Bouscaut Blanc that denudes it of Bordeaux character, so that it comes across more like an attractive modern Australia Chardonnay! The palate is very crisp on the entr...

Margaux Whilst Saint Estèphe provided a bevy of beauties in 2010, I am not so convinced by the appellation of Margaux. During these blind tastings the wines were more inconsistent and seemed overwhelmed by the growing season. I often think that vintages that are defined by their concentration, thick...

Saint Estèphe Saint Estèphe offers a strong showing of 2010s. Predictably, the Château Cos d'Estournel showed its class and was my top wine of the flight, also garnering the highest average scores. It is simply one of the best wines of the Left Bank, riddled with class and breeding from top to botto...

Saint Emilion Saint Emilion might be slightly over-shadowed by the peaks of Pomerol, but the appellation conjured outstanding wines in 2010. What I find fascinating in conducting a blind tasting is to contrast the performance of the newcomers, the garagistes (such a quaint term nowadays) compared to...

I too am at a loss regarding JR's tasting notes. A couple of weeks ago I had the good fortune to attend a tasting event at which some 50 chateaux were pouring samples of both their '09 and '10 vintages (no firsts unfortunately). To a chateau the 09s were plump, round, juicy; full of plum, cassis, co...

Along with the 2000, the 2005 is one of the two greatest d'Issans I have ever tasted. Kudos to proprietor Emmanuel Cruse for creating this beauty. Well it needs time. As you can see from my note, I wasn't that big on it upon opening. It took awhile. I definitely tasted the oak, but not as strongly as you BG. By the way, have you ever tasted the 01 and/or 06? I wonder if the 06 is closer to the 04 or the 08, or something entirely different?

100 point wines not selling
I don't subscribe to any on-line wine sites. But every now and then a "free" piece comes to my attention. This is a remarkable bit where James Suckling can't believe that no one is buying the wines he scored at 100 points:
