Stuart, I wonder if this is a case where storage issues might be at play here. I've really not heard of people loving the wine like I did outside of my local tasting circle. I know of a few other very experienced tasters who have my take on the wine. Perhaps there was some issue with different barre...
Dear BWE: I should note that I shared this bottle along with '99 Raveneau Valumr, '85 Bachelet Charmes and '76 Bollinger at dinner with Joe Belmaati last night. I will share more from this memorable dinner soon. Pappa, I did not bring the '82 LAP in the past. Funny, but I had this wine blind (the '8...
1982 Château Latour à Pomerol - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol (3/4/2009) Wow. Blinded I would have thought this was the '82 Petrus or Lafleur. The wine took about an hour to get going in the decanter. When it woke the nose offered up wet leather, cigar box, cedar, licorice and tar. In the m...
I have read that '06 is a balanced vintage and sounds like one I would like. I'll have to try some of the usual suspects. Jim, we Americans do work hard!
Jim, Be careful with the Pommards and Beaunes when young. I don't know the '06 vintage but I suspect it is different from '05 where there was a lot of youthful fruit to start. These wines often need years of bottle age to show their stuff. I just finished a '96 Jadot Beaune Ursales that was just beg...
Jim, very interesting. Your story reminds me to some degree of the coal business in eastern PA. America, like other nations, is marked by those immigration patterns. People bring their language and culture with them. The Spanish language dominance here is both good and bad, in my opinion. I always w...
Had a '00 GPL last night ITNOS. It took some time to open but was excellent and had the characteristic tannin of the vintage which to me borders on sweet.
Alex, perhaps this should be a thread in itself but I was curious as to which White Bordeaux are your favorites for everyday drinking. Bottlings that represent a good QPR?
Stuart, I've never had a great bottle of the '70 Palmer. I much prefer the '78. The '82 Lafleur to my palate has the extra element to push it up into the Pantheon of fine wine. I can't say that the '82 l'Evangile did that for me while it was still a great bottle of wine. I don't have much experience...
Stuart, Like you I love White Burgundy. I just got tired of getting burned by the Pre-Mox plauge. I stick to Leflaive and have not been burned. I have never had an affected bottle. It is a shame that this problem has devistated White Burgundy. I like them with age and other than Leflaive, I would no...
This old lady just could not bring it together tonight. The wine remained tertiary on the nose with little to no fruit, tar and leather on the palate. It was drinkable with and herb-crusted rack of lamb but really did not give much pleasure. Oh well. So it goes with old bottles. A few times a year I...
Alch, your point is exactly what is so important. Having Poyferres in a more affordable range allows a huge number of normal folk to enjoy the stuff. Few people are going to drink $100 wines on a regular basis.
2000 Domaine Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc (2/13/2009) This wine has aged well. The nose you would expect from Leflaive with popcorn notes and roasted nuts. The palate is mature but still has lift and focus. This went very well with Talapia and capers. The fruit is ri...
It has been a long, hard week with a few nice surprises built in. I was trying to decide what to pull in honor of CDP month. I just don't own any so I decided to try something with a little bottle age. This bottle won the lottery tonight. When I first started cellaring Bordeaux, I bought many differ...
It is nice to see this hobby become more affordable. Reminds me of the way things used to be. A person can build a cellar when desirable wines are affordable. For a while there it was just nuts.
Jim, you are correct. I would agree with you that this will be a goal for '09. It would be my pleaure, acutally. Family demands have taken up so much of my time but then again I would really have it no other way. We have to set a date soon.
Jim, when I reflect on the "Energy" of BWE I can not help but ackowledge what an important force it has been for me. This site is about more than wine - it is about friends. Almost 10 years on I suspect that we will be doing this until our last sip. That is something to celebrate on a Thur...
Jim, you have a memory like an elephant! I think your ammended score accurately reflects the meaning of your notes. I sensed that extra (+) in the Boillot note! Not that the Cantemerle was not equally good. Yes, French wine is one of life's true pleasures. It is a lifetime passtime. I can't imagine ...
Keep those notes coming. I have never had the '82 La Fleur-Petrus but your note makes me want to find a bottle. The '98 Angelus is a big wine. I think the '95, while also a baby, is drinking better today. Hopefully the '95 and '98 Angelus will match the '89 /'90 duo.
I don't have much experience with Fourrier pre-'98 so this helps me. Didn't they have a big change in the domaine right around '96? Thanks for the notes.
Yes, this wine is still not mature. It is a very good Bordeaux. My only issue is the price/quality. If you bought this on release you should be very happy.
I have a strange history with this wine. I purchased it on release based on the Parker reviews and cellared it. Then I sold my case after Whuzzup___ converted me over to the Burgundy side. The reality is that I still love Bordeaux, especially the right bank. Selling this wine really haunted me. Of c...
My '00 Cantermerle was pretty open recently. I am on the lookout for more '00 PB and GPL. Hopefully the prices will come down now that they have closed.
I've that the '99 Roumier Busierre several times and while it is not outstanding I think that you might have had an off bottle. I find it to be on the rustic side but with sufficient fruit. Nice notes by the way.
