Re: As BWE winds down after over 23 years.... My note to jean-Nicolas.

As Ian said, Jim, if you want to go on a public forum to bitch about not being invited to a dinner, and make really nasty, disparaging comments about one of the hosts, you must expect the response to be on the same public forum. If you are going to have a major tantrum, it is strange that you would ...

Short of an apology, I too will be leaving. Dale is a close and very dear friend, and this attack was unnecessary and disgusting. The reference to homelessness really stuck in my craw. Yes Dale was homeless for a while, but now runs (brilliantly) the organization that helped him, Midnight Run. That ...

Re: So what have you bought lately?

I woke up at 3:00 am and could not get back to sleep. I looked at my phone to find an e mail with a few bargain wines. Only after buying 2 bottles of Conseillante 1998 and one bottle of Haut Brion 1959 did I fall back asleep. So the secret to sound sleep, buy more wine.

Over the Top Lunch 2023

Another year, another OTT, but this was a much more laid back version than previous ones. It wasn’t intended to be; although originally I had limited the number to twelve, but when four people backed out on the same day, eight seemed to be a righteous number and we stuck with that. Back to one of ou...

Ian,
I just bought a six pack from Hatton and Edwards for around £500. The deals are definitely out there, and the good news is I have enough, and have stopped looking.

Re: Magdelaine 2005

I like traditional beautifully made, balanced, low alcohol wines that shows both complex flavors and a lightness of touch, Magdelaine was a standout. It became even more important as Parker et al went for ever larger, more brutish wines, and Saint Emilion was a particularly susceptible, as Merlot is...

Magdelaine 2005

Last time I had this was at a Magdelaine vertical a year and a half ago. It was incredibly promising, but also extremely tight, and I scored it 96+. I was meeting a couple of friends, but the box of Jouan went missing (later found) so I pivoted and brought the Magdelaine. The year and a half brought...

The 1996 and 1996 you mentioned have better reviews, but I found both tannic and a little coarse. The 1990 at our vertical was better than expected, but still a 90 point wine.

Brilliant stuff and very expensive. Taylor sometimes released this the same year as normal vintage.

The autoroute from Bordeaux is fastest, but full of trucks so not easy to drive.
The wine list at Rekondo is fantastic and very well priced. The food is solid. The pintxos tour is a must.

Trotanoy in general is one of my favorite wines, but like other Pomerols, it has become a luxury item. I have not tasted it since primeur, but my notes indicated a stand out, although inevitably, I preferred the VCC. The sleeper was Latour a Pomerol

How is a wine where the grapes are not ripe come across as hot?
I agree with you that the Medoc is far superior to the Right Bank. I don’t get heat from the Right Bank, just a blob of slightly herbaceous flavors.

They obviously know what they are talking about. For most of the wine cognoscenti - with a few notable exceptions on this board - Lynch Bages is, de facto, a super second, and relatedly the most glaring misalignment in the 1855 classification. The only disappointing Lynch I have had in the last cou...

Underrated Issan

Out of Bordeaux. Caymus of course
Underrated Cabernet Calluna

Wrong grape Jouan Clos Saint Denis

And of course we can’t forget Las Cases😻 which like many on the board here would have been the immediate choice.

Fun to see this thread resuscitated. In the intervening five years I have probably tasted/drunk around a dozen wines, and they finally seem to be emerging from the dour stage. I still think that fully emerged, it is going to be one of the greatest vintages, and even with some of the highly regarded ...

I think you are in a similar boat to me, Jim. You know what you like and are buying larger quantities of it. I have found that there are fewer wines that impress me; much of it is due to climate change and for me, unappealingly high levels of alcohol. So I end up buying wines I know, particularly ol...

Niellon is supposedly being shipped second week of September, which means a minimum of six weeks. It is always fun; you can follow the boat, which often takes wild detours. As the wine is kept in temperature controlled reefers, I am usually not concerned, but one ship during Covid took a side trip t...

Caymus 40th Anniversary 2012

I remember the Caymus’ of old, wines of depth and complexity. This was neither. It was served blind, and I thought it was a sub $15 commercial bottling, notable for its sweetness (it tasted as if someone had added a spoonful of sugar to each glass). The host was embarrassed enough to open a back up ...
