Re: Some old school Bordeaux for 70th birthday dinner

Priceless that old Gio post! 2003, when BWE was still a young star…

Happy 70th Rob, and happy the wines delivered. Miss you my friend. And take care of Susan.

In my book, the young 2019 Lynch Bages is what remind me the most the young 12 yo 1989 Lynch Bages.

The 2019 needs time but is a very concentrated, tannic, and genuine Pauîlac.

Hope it is not damaged like the one in DC.

Politicians and wines have something in common : they can't please or satisfy everyone. Of course, we each have our own perception, understanding, values, or preferences. Example : when i said that the 1985 Château Grand-Puy Lacoste was better than the 1986 Château Leoville Barton in Napa in 2002, a...

Some of my favorite wines: 1999 and 2010 Clape Cornas : both were magnificent, with the dark blackcurrant, smoky ...

Wow, what an event Izak. With Mr. Mitjavile! I did not had many Tertre Roteboeuf, but tecognize it is a special Saint Émilion. I’m sure i tasted the 1988 as i brought a bottle at SteveH house for dinner long time ago. I was excellent, precise fruit and slightly exotic oak. The 1989 is even riper and...

Mixed bag of wines

In the last 11 days, i sampled and drank more fine wines than the last 9 months : the 2024 BWE DC convention, a AOC Margaux tasting last Thursday, and Saturday i did another celebration for my 50 years old, calling it The Dead of my 50 Years, as it was the day of Dead. With many friends, it was time...

Oh shit. I know this 2018 Calon Segur is kind of controversial… Did not had it myself. Was hoping that the vintage would have been saved by the terroir or the Château team, but from your report feel like it is a miss, different from the 2021 Cantemerle, but a miss.

No detailed report and was very happy to see everyone. I only tasted 20 wines, 3 Champagne and the 2011 Château Yquem (complete, complex, just amazing). 1990 Château Pichon Longueville Baron was for me the red of the night, with all it exotic character, ripe, long, complex, with multiple sides. For the Champagne, both were great, i consider a tie. Dom Pérignon with a bit more weight, lemon peel, minerals, salrty, long. The Comte was a bit lighter, but more subtle white flesh fruit, more salt, a bit more bubbles, long.

The 2018 i tasted up to date are super concentrated, super ripe and flabby. Maybe in 20-30 years they will be better, but i remember what producers told us in 2015 in Bordeaux : if a vintage isn’t ok to start, lesser to improve significantly down the road. Right now, 2018 don’t delivers too much, is...

Good analysis Jim, and you know i share the same conclusion for the moment.

I think the homogeneity is better in 2019, and i liked mostly all2019i had, while 2020 is more s mixed bag. I really liked the 2020 GPL, but did not had the 2019 yet.

Enjoyed with lasagna and it was perfect. It is a superb Chianti, made in a controlled way, at the right density. Color is medium red, not that dark. The 2021 Château Cantemerle is surely on the lighter side, even if it has a dark red color. I agree. That young 2020 Lafon Rochet is in a very light body flowery style at the moment, not convincing and not Saint Estèphe at all.

You should try the 2016, that is the real Lafon Rochet.

Hi Harry. This one from Jean-Luc is still affordable, but you’re right, prices are going way up since 3 years.

Jean-Paul wines are better i thing, but 2.5 times higher price than his brother’s wines.
