Re: Poll: What is your favorite appellation?

Actually I think the question stated, "you could drink from only one appellation for your last meal tonight ... " (emphasis added). There appears to be no limitation on the number of chateau or bottles. I'm surprised no one, but especially Stefan, picked up on this. Who drinks just one bot...

Re: Poll: In general, is Bordeaux under $30 worth buying?

There's a ton of worthy Bdx at 30 and under, much of which has kept well since I've purchased it. But then I tend to go hunting in vintage of centuries mostly and I can usually do really well in the $20 range even. In fact, I'd say there's more than one man (me) could purchase even though I'm always...

Re: Has Bordeaux become Boring

Not sure it's mentioned there and we did not discuss this in the various recent threads, but part of the problem, for those who think there is a problem, may be down to the corporatization of Bordeaux. I'm under the impression that quite a few of the great growths are owned by insurance companies, p...

Re: Suckling goes gaga over the 2010's

Is the 2010 Pontet Canet also 100 "Parker Points," or do we not yet know? That appears to be the Suckling 100-pt 100-pt/price leader by far. The runner-up being, what, Ducru-Beaucaillou? Suckling points don't really count for much, though. Frankly, Suckling doesn't count for much.

Re: Of blizzards and Sociando....

I like SM, including the oddball characteristics that always seem present regardless of vintage. I'd say its style has less to do with the terroir than the man who owns it and makes the wine. Plus they have some large plots at the chateau but many others though fragmented about the commune. I read s...

Jim, availability and rational pricing permitting, you, at least, should have a case of every BWE WOTY. In fact, somebody should jump on this idea of mine for a BWE Hall of Fame. There one can look at bottles and cases of wine, compromising pictures of BWErs in their underwear, things like that. Act...

Re: Poll: HWSRN: Has he been good or has he been bad for Bdx?

If you are good enough to taste the La Conseillante-ness in the La Conseillante, then I don't doubt you might be disappointed if it were replaced by even a (objectively?) "better" wine that did not taste quite the same. But it's a brave new world and there's probably an emerging cohort lau...

Yeah, but the 08 was BWE WOTY. How could both those things be true? I mean, we don't go for slick, micro-oxed wines here. Not at all.

What's missing here is a conspiracy theory. Ex-Navy SEALS are being killed or "committing suicide" at a statistically alarming rate. Teh NFL is totally rigged. (This I've learned from the Yahoo message boards and comments and yes, the "teh" is purposeful). None of this is acciden...

Dipped into the stash last night for a good ol' Bdx. Having had so many good (albeit humble) and presumably mainly merlot 09s lately I decided to go more classic and old school last night with a filet mignon. Having had this wine a few times before I was looking forward to see if it came across as a...

Is this a requiem? Is he dead? What would Haut-Bergey be without his supposed influence? That's the other side of the coin. The answer might be languishing in obscurity (deserved perhaps), or perhaps with its vines completely pulled up. Wasn't Bordeaux the most well-known and well-loved wine region ...

By the way, an 02 isn't really aged 10 until spring 13 at the earliest, right? I mean the 10-year anniversary of the 02 harvest is fall 12 but the 02s did not debut until when, March or April 03? I thought that several of the 08s were pretty substantial. I bought and tried a few, like DdC, that are usually at the fringes of my walletgrasp. I'm sure they will be fine down the line - maybe not in some comparative tastings, but on the dinner table by themselves. I probably won't be able to tell...

I think Patrick will agree with me on this one, in any recent vintage I don't like Haut Bergey's label. It is not befitting a quality wine. It lacks gravitas and oomph factor at any price point. These are the same people who make Ch. Barde Haut in St. Em. The 05 of both are nice (esp. the Barde Haut...
