Re: Is this a left-leaning board?
Well, based on the early returns, it does appear to be a left-leaning board. But a few polls haven't closed yet and there remain the absentee and early voting ballots to count. I'll have to pull a Romney and wait before conceding this. Of course before declaring anything I'll have to get with Tom on...

Is this a left-leaning board?
So recently a member posited a simple posit: This board is "Left Bank centric." Another member ran with that. It seemed he ran out of bounds but he was also tackled rather roughly by yet another member doing his Ray Lewis impersonation. I'm not here to throw flags, or to discourse on why t...

Alex, for these Bordeaux Superior and Cotes de Castillon and Cotes de Bourg wines I'm paying $12-$18. This is at one retail outlet in Kailua of a Oahu chain and at Costco near Honolulu. These are very strong value for the price. Of course these are all 2009s. I have not bothered to check out who mig...

Re: Seeking advice on "old school" producers in BDX
Doesn't Leo B. get any votes? Not that I've had many, but I think in three or four vintages since 1998 I would say not one of them was flashy. Maybe Langoa is even less modern. At least they always seem yield remarks from certain quarters about being for the grandkids. Sociando Mallet does seem immu...

Re: Object Lesson: 2009 Ch. Tour d'Auron, Bdx Superior
Just finished up the last glass. Did not freeze it overnight but just refriged it. I was even more impressed. The bouquet held up well and it seemed to have filled in/topped off a bit, not that it was in any way skimpy or thin. Maybe the flavor was more pronounced. It is not what I'd call soft/flabb...

Object Lesson: 2009 Ch. Tour d'Auron, Bdx Superior
Working my way through the 09s avalaiable at the local wine store, I grabbed one of these. It was instantly appealing and it has the 09 breadth and warmth and glycerin, but is by no means the most mouthfilling of its 09 peers. Still though, a couple of things stood out: 1) The bouquet had obviously ...

Weren't we warned off 05 northern Medoc's hard tannin by HWSRN? It seems 8 years would hardly be enough time to soften a wine like SM up - especially in mag.

Stumbled on a Thai-Vietnamese joint in Kailua that has a whopping $1 per person corkage for BYO. This wine went real well with green papaya salad, garlic edamame, lemongrass soup, fried tofu and lemongrass and pad Thai. Medium-sweet, lightly effervescent, with literally mouthwatering acidity in the ...

1968 Caves Velhas Garrafeira. I think I had it in 1984 or 1986, picked it up for like $4 at the now defunct Eagle wines in Georgetown, DC. A 16 or 18 year old wine, it was the velvet glove thing. That's when I realized it was suboptimal to drink those then normal, now "old school," Bordeau...

Re: 2010 Bordeaux Buying Plan?
Those are amusing comments. Despite the reportedly "unprecedented" levels of polyphenols, I have a hard time believing there has not been a - perhaps a few - similar vintage in Bordeaux, and not just in the past run of best vintages ever. Since when one looks back to the most heralded vint...

Re: TN: Chateau Peyraud 2009
2009 is like shooting fish in a barrel when it comes to finding merely "good" wines. I tried a Bdx Superior last night and it was also very good, nicely ripe, fullish bodied, fine tannin and a structure cloaked in fruit. Lacking the treatment of a cru classe or even a sexed-up pretender, i...

Re: Duhart-Milon 2009
Duhart may be well worth the freight. It's quite good. The 2000 is really at a level with the best wines I've had. So if I was down with paying $100+ for a wine, I'd be snapping this up. Or if I wanted something for a special occasion - though I have a few of those already. Not sour grapes, just the...

I'm afraid on absolute terms Duhart has not been affordable for me since about 2005 or whenever (as alleged) the Chinese started buying this due to the Lafite connection. But it sounds good. The 2000 is excellent and the 2002 is also very well done - both complex wines as you describe, but not in th...

Just a guess, 92% Bdx, 4% Burg, 3% assorted Italian and 1% "other." Might be a little low on the Bdx figure. I think I win the prize for the most devoted BWE. I haven't got a fav and probably have at most two cases of any label across all vintages. My knees don't wobble but my mouth waters...

I agree with David. Drinkable does not necessarily also mean optimal for a particular palate, or that a bottle has reached an evolutionary dead end. I suspect one need only go to cellartracker and view the notes for some 05s ( or 00s, 02s, 03s, 08s etc.) to find "the answer." I bet approxi...

How's the vineyard coming along, Phil?
My better half either likes a wine "a lot" or not at all. She may observe that a wine is tannic or acidic. Flavors, scents? Fugetabboudit.

If the object is to drink, not taste, and you can get 2-oz pours of all the good wines, then I would pay the hunny and bring a nice leg of lamb with me and call it dinner.

Would I be wrong in saying that Bellevue is the most popular name for a Chateau in Bordeaux? Don't these people have any imagination? Re: Guidelines for tasting young BDX? Wally's UGC 20
Ah yes, the "hole" in the middle. It seems to fill in with age in my slender experience. I attributed the hole as a function of an onslaught of fruit in the fore and an onslaught of tannin in the back, making the middle seem like the saddle between two peaks. Actually I thought it was pret...

Re: Guidelines for tasting young BDX? Wally's UGC 20
Fill your pockets with shelled walnuts. Have a half piece between wines. It will compensate for the tannin and let you concentrate on the fruit. Disclaimer: I've only done this at home. Professional and near professional tasters would scoff at this, I assume. But I do recall reading here, or in some...
