RIP Grapes Hilo
The first personally-known to me Covid-19 casualty. Not to belittle the physical human toll but this is the first permanent business closure I am personally aware of. And the Hilo wine and dining scene is the worse for it. Now the nearest specialty fine wine store is 100 miles away in Kona. The same...

Re: Feeling Howish: TN 2014 Ch. Cantemerle
Just to round this off. This wine did throw me a bit of a curve. It was not closed, nor did it have that abrupt burst of fruit and hard shutdown of tannin in the finish. There was a pleasing warmth and spiciness towards the end of the bottle and it showed very well with the food. So I wouldn't hesit...

OK, I have learned from this. Depending on the taster, 84, 86 and even 88 point wines may be very unappetizing.

Re: Extraordinary tasting in Copenhagen - Bx 1945 vintage
My point is that those 45s that scored 86 points, your descriptions did not read as though the wines were "above average to excellent." Maybe that is not your definition of an 86-point wine. As for putting this to a new topic, we can discuss this in generalities all day to no end. I think ...

Suckling raged about this. "Same quality as the 2010." Let's have a look under the hood. Nice dark color, nice legs in the glass. Lactic nose. Otherwise subdued. No berries red, blue, black or Margaux of any kind. A flourish of fine but stiff tannin. Good palate spread and coverage. Light ...

Re: Extraordinary tasting in Copenhagen - Bx 1945 vintage
None of these 45s scored less than 86 points, including ones with some lousy descriptions. While I credit your descriptions, and your ranking of the wines, this is pretty discrediting to the 100-pt. rating scale, or so it seems to me. This is one of the reasons I have never been able to assign point...

I got this a couple of years ago from JJ Buckley. It was part of some odd offerings including 1983 and 1994 Ch. La Grave Trigant de Boisset, 1994 Ch. Lafleur Gazin and 1986 Ch. Grand Puy Lacoste, all in the $25 to $39 range. So I took a flier on a mixed case+ of them. These LCdGs have nice fills. Bu...

Missed opportunities: 1996 Pichon Baron for $36. I bought a mixed case of the Lagrange, the Leo P. and something of the same rank that escapes me now but passed on the Baron because Tanzer rated it as "ultimately a good, but not great wine." DOH! This was around 2002 or so. 2000 Lynch Bage...

Drinking beautifully now. This is vital and expansive and perfectly balanced. Classic, penetrating bouquet with some cedar. The palate is elegant with firm and fine tannin, sort of lifted tannin, bright acidity and medium body. It's a little dry and sharp initially but softened, sweetened and expand...

Exceeds expectations. On release I really thought this was similar to the Pontet Canet, not as polished and perhaps not quite as big but very similar in flavor spectrum. Interesting counterpoint to the other night's 2010 Talbot in one particular. First off, this is a fairly bold mouthful of wine. There's power here for merlot doubters. This is large scaled and full-bodied but also not heavy. Still quite dark in color, there's a pleasing bouquet which I couldn't real...

For the first time in several years. Just to recap (no, I will not go into a paragraphs-long discussion of the weather during the 2010 growing season), on release this wine seemed very promising and not atypical of Bordeaux, the left bank or St. Julien. Good scale, fairly fresh, well balanced. Defin...

Cellaring has made a difference. This wine was remarkably high, tight and thin on release. I had it once or twice more between now and then and it seemed the same. Tonight the wine killed it. This still has a seam of tannin that is very thin but very stiff; the fruit however has really blossomed and...

Cadet Piola it is. Nothing prurient, just recalling a bygone time when people picnicked topless among the vines--or at least an era when this could be depicted on a wine label.

I liked the St. Emilion with the topless lady on the label. The 1989 (iirc) was very good. The name escapes and I think it has since been merged or acquired by a neighboring estate and the label retired. Alex should be able to recall this one.
