Re: Montelena Tasting
Thanks for the report! I will let my '01s sleep. Any thoughts on the '96, '99 or '02? I don't have my notes handy but my recollection was they were all fine, above average or better. the '02, I recall, we all liked the least of the first flight but there was nothing wrong with it. I don't think it'...

Re: Montelena Tasting
Meant to mention, not long ago, I had a mag of 1985 Insignia and it was singning, so the vintage itself was not bad, just that some wines did not manage to go the distance. In their youth, virtually every 85 I tasted was gorgeous. Also, a couple of people there had tasted the 74 within the past year...

Montelena Tasting
I wish I brought my notes. Anyway, this was at Keene's, a very famous old steakhouse that goes back to 18somethingorother. It's very "clubby" and old fashioned. This was held in a private room. There were 15 of us. We tasted, all told, I believe 17 vintages. One bottle, the oldest, was sim...

Rioja Tasting
This was rather insane and trust me I don't do things like this all that often. I got a last minute invite and could not say no, even though I know next to jack about Rioja. The purpose of the tasting was an auction preview and all the wines except a few came from the seller's cellar. The Rioja prod...

Re: 2005 PB and LB Info
BTW, my note was about Pichon Baron. The '05 Lynch Bages struck me the same way, just too closed at that point to say much about. Didn't stop me from buying two bottles though!
Did not taste the Leoville Barton that I can recall. I did like the 2006 a lot though.

Re: 2005 PB and LB Info
I had it once at a tasting, so 2 ounce pour at most, no food, I thought it was tight and a tannic beast. No doubt will be great some day but today is not that day. Buy it and try to forget you have it for 20 years.
Cheapies
One of the best things about Bord, IMO, are the great deals one can find. 20 years ago you used to have to spend $10 on a bottle of Napa Cab to get a decent daily drinker that might acquire some additional character with 5 years in the cellar. These days, $10 in Napa = plonk. In Burgundy, you need t...

Re: 1970 Montrose
Good point re: the leather, there was definitely leather in there. BTW, re: color. Ink dark. No bricking at the rim at all. Apperance was a like a 10 y/o wine, 15 at most. Very, very old school wine. Would probably go great with Saddle of Venison or Haunches of Bear (not that I have ever had the lat...

Re: 75 Montrose anyone?
I had three bottles of this last year. I liked it a lot. Mine all had very expressive noses and pretty decent palates. Overall, less tannic than the 1970 I had last night. Would happily pay $70 for that wine and in fact paid more for the bottles I consumed last year.

1970 Montrose
Had this last night out of magnum. Never had it before but I have had several 1970s, including Lafite and Haut-Brion. This, honestly, was better than both of those. Last year I had several bottles of the 1975. That wine, IMO, was and is perfectly mature. The 1970 on the other hand was amazingly youn...
