Pichon Lalande, Solaia, Musar, Heitz, Penfolds and more

I haven’t posted for a while but here are some impressions from a tasting of mature examples of cabernet based wines from around the world a few months ago. Not a loser in this bunch of wines showcasing such a wide spectrum of styles and even the older wines were not past their drinking plateaus. 1....

Re: 1983 Chateau Pavie

Jim,

I've not tasted any recent vintages of St Emilion although I do have the odd bottle in the cellar. I enjoyed this wine so for educational purposes I should try a recent vintage, perhaps 2001. For reference I have loved wines like 1990 Trotanoy but I don't drink Bordeaux very often.

1983 Chateau Pavie

A refined bouquet leading to lovely plum flavours finishing with some chocolate. Medium bodied with a fine mouthfeel. Super fruit definition and beautifully balanced. Would be interesting to compare to newer styles. (strong B)

Taking a world view of sportsmen, and particularly looking at longevity and record breakers, I vote for: 1. Don Bradman 2. Pele 3. Wayne Gretzky Looking at US sports, I vote for: 1. Lou Gehrig 2. Joe Montana Honourable mentions to Mohammed Ali, John McEnroe and Bo Jackson for various reasons. I'm su...

Yes but only infrequently as I don't get the chance to drink Bordeaux wines too often.

Kind Regards,

Assorted TN of mostly Bordeaux wines

Saved a few interesting TN for the new website. 1998 Chateau Angelus – well balanced wine with dark and brooding blackcurrant fruit but still remains a little reserved. Try again in a few years. (B) 1982 Chateau La Fleur-Petrus – rich, focussed flavours of blackberry, plum, hints of vanilla and choc...
