Re: 1989 Bordeaux Retrospective
Thanks for the notes, Carlos. I'm a big fan of the '89s, especially in Pessac-Leognan (and Pauillac, too). Powerful, meaty, gritty in Bordeaux terms. I am interested in opinions that some of the big boys are not yet ready yet. Some of us were fortunately able to drink Chateau Margaux at the Chateau ...

Re: Paging SDR and Mr. Vino to the Champagne aisle please...
Sorry, I've been MIA myself. But now it's time to jump back into the river.
I've never been impressed with Pommery Cuvee Louise, but I have not tried any recent vintages.
I've been very impressed lately with the NV Bollinger. It's big, flavorful and tangy. Plays above its weight.

Re: NV Champagne
Veuve Clicquot fits the description except for the word "good." Like others, I also like the Pol Roger, but its a little hard to find. Bollinger is fabulous, but dry, not borderline sweet. In my market, it costs considerable more than $45 (but it's well worth it; very close to Krug MV). St...

Re: Second nightb at Alex
I agree. Sometimes the flashy bottle is the best part. But on other occasions, in a reverse snobbery way, some think the wine can never be as good as the beautiful enameled label. In general, the dosage is on the high side (or seems to be), especially in "soft" years such as "99 and '...

Thank you, Danny. We are so glad you and Danielle could join us. It was a fun evening on a range of topics of conversation. You nailed the wines perfectly, of course. In the past, when I have done a battle of the '82 heavyweights, the Mouton usually was just a slight bit more interesting due to outs...

Re: Need Bordeaux for the weekend?
That's quite a list. Here's my whine: I never heard from before or since, but in 1991 or so, I got a postcard from WWOW offering '47 Cheval (18 bottles), '59 Latour and '59 and '61 Mouton sourced from Europe. This was before counterfeit or adulteration became a serious problem. The prices were about...

Re: What are the 15 best wine bottles you drank
I like the "top of the head" idea because if it doesn't immediately come to mind, maybe it wasn't that great, just fantastic. In no particular order: 1. 1953 Margaux (the wine that changed my life; I couldn't believe wine could taste that good; drunk about 1978) 2. 1961 Petrus 3. 1988 Krug...

I've been lucky enough to drink a few of these, but of course not most. You left bank fanatics left off the greatest Bordeaux I have ever tasted - 1961 Petrus (magnum). Over 100 points if there is such a thing. It wasn't my bottle. A couple of friends picked it up in Las Vegas from a room temperatur...

Hi, Jacques, Thanks for the nice notes. I have a modest stash of Faiveley 2005 Premier Crus that were wonderful in 2010 but now seem tight as a Gordian knot. Also some '99s from various producers, especially Anne Gros, that I thought would be in full bloom by now - but no such luck. How long do I ha...

I've been AWOL from BWE for over a year, mostly due to family illnesses and deaths.
I'll miss this convention, too and it sounds like another great one.
I still drink though, so I sure hope I can get more involved soon.
Have a great time.

Re: Day one: Chateau Margaux
Stuart - In my experience you can divide vintages of Chateau Margaux into three categories: (1) The so-so vintages where Chateau Margaux produces average wines or underachieves. This would include wines like the 2008, 2006, 2002, 1998, 1989, 1988,1985 and most things in the 20 or so years before bef...

Re: Day two: Chateau Latour
Sadly, the pristine bottle of 1982 Latour I opened last night was bland and boring, but not corked. My previous samplings of the '82 have been superb, so obviously there is bottle variation at age 31. The '70 is also quite variable, so I'm glad the one Nic remembers was good.

Sadly, Chablis is no more immune to premox than other white Burgundy. I can't remember the exact vintages or vineyards, but I have poured down the drain premier and grand cru Chablis age 5 - 10 from Raveneau and Fevre, to name two. Fevre has the worst reputation and is now consistently excellent (fr...

Nice, work, Nic. The "regular" NV Tarlant is my go-to champagne whenever I want something really nice but not crazy expensive. It's usually a three-vintage blend, but that information is not on the bottle or back label. I loaded up several years ago on the '95/'96/'97 blend and it's even b...

I find Salon ages a lot more quickly than its peers; e.g., DP, Krug or Comtes. I like older champagne in general, but I haven't acquired a taste for Salon older than 15-20 years.

Jim is right. I was totally satisfied by the food at One Market, although the service can be a somewhat slow. It's a fairly noisy room, though, but not too loud to have a conversation and some tables are better situated than others for that purpose.

Sorry I can't answer these questions definitely, David. Moët prefers to keep a lot of their practices secret. For example, they will not even tell us how many cases of DP are made each year.

1990 Château Léoville Barton - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (4/12/2008) Maybe unfair to rate, since I had a head cold, but this seemed awfully simple yet sound. My observations about DP Oenotheque: It's always good of course - it's DP and it does have additional time on the lees. But I am finding that there's not a whole lot of difference between the "regular" DP and the Oenotheque in the second plenitude; I.e. '96, '95 (havened tried the '90 yet)...

I too believe that the low alcohol Kabinetts age better, but I've never seen any explanation for it. More important is the pedigree of the site (and the winemaker).
