Re: TN: 1959 Château Calon-Ségur

Mid-shoulder ullage on a '59 is somewhat low; some are as high is top shoulder or even very top shoulder. I'm glad you had a positive experience. There's nothing in the wine world like old Bordeaux deep in the secondary stage.

Once in a while, you have to go for it. It helps to have a wine-rich friend who loves Bordeaux and has lots of it. 1990 Krug Clos du Mesnil Virtually perfect. It smells like a kitchen where someone is making Christmas cookies. It seems almost sweet but of course it's perfectly dry. Predominant flavo...

Well. Nic, I can't say the '47 CB was better than the '82 Lafleur, just different - but not much different. The '61 Latour a Pomerol is another one of those "once in a lifetime" wines, but probably not my lifetime. Even 20+ years ago, when the '47 CB was not too hard to find, the Latour a ...

I'm a big fan of Comtes but it's not great every vintage. It's relatively sanely priced compared with the other prestige cuvées, though. The '95 and '96 are drinking very well now, but the once fabulous '90 is fading already. I will definitely buy the '02, but it's not yet available from my usual so...

Yes, I was "celebrating" something - my "Welcome to Medicare" package arrived in the mail, so 1947 is my birth year. Wide World of Wine had a case and a half of the '47 CB for about double per what Claudius mentioned, but well below the going rate at the time in the US, which was...

1985 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne (3/24/2012) Juhlin is right - there is no better wine, and certainly no better champagne, than Krug Clos du Mesnil. As a former fanatic and collector of white Burgundy, I was dismayed as were so many others when the premox disaster struck. I have not bought any for almost 4 years and poured dozens of bottles down the drain or bartered them with someone who actually likes oxidation. As a substitute, I instead boug...

2006 Pingus = $650
2006 Termanthia = $199

Deep, deep ruby red, all the way to the rim. Can't be more than 15 years old, 20 at the most. Even just a sniff tells you you are on the hallowed ground of Pessac-Léognan. Complex classical aroma of woodsmoke, cedar, cranberry, cassis. On the palate, a major hit of mature yet vigorous cab sauv, mayb...

TN: Old Bordeaux Man Tries Fancy Spoofulated Spanish Wines - and Likes Them!

Of course Bordeaux is the King and always will be because of its fascinating flavors, aromas, complexity and ability to age. Arguably, Burgundy is the Queen. But occasionally, I get the urge to dry the anti-Bordeaux; something completely different, more brash, more obvious, less cerebral. Although I...

Has anyone ever had Climens in any vintage at any age that was disappointing? Young, old, middle-aged, they're all fabulous. If I was pushed to the wall, I'd pick the '89 as my favorite. Not at all overdone or overoaked, blossoming beautifully. As for the old vintages, the '71 is still lively and wo...

The one I have been using for years is the http://www.casesbypelican.com/wine-carrier.htm
