Thanks for this update. Was hesitating to open one last week that exactly would have had the same purpose; an ad-hoc replacement with not much time to breathe. I know Lanessan ain't a charmer when young and 10 years apparently still is too young for this estate. Going to keep my bottles cellared for...

Re: Tasting of 17 wines from Saint-Estèphe

This comes in very helpful, thanks Alex. St. Estèphe, in my book, is a real men's wine. Sometimes tough, rustic, hard, sometimes wonderful, rich, meaty, chewy. If Pauillac is the gentleman, St. Estèphe is a working class hero. Seems styles are melting due to merlot and new ideas. Compared to St. Jul...

Barton, imho, never really stands out in mass tastings. Always seem to score it 91 or 92 max when compared to others, because it is not shouting, extravert and meant to be compared. On its own, Barton merits higher scores for the ultimate class and pleasure it brings. Recently received my sixpack of ...

St. Estephe clay soil provived some excellent Cru Bourgeois. Furthermore, I prefer the wines from North Médoc (St. E, P. and St. J). Others never rocked my boat.

Sold my Duharts for a great price a couple of years ago when the Lafite-Rothschild hype was high. Had a couple of 03's before they went and loved the wine, although I found it not on par with the 03 Pontet, which costed 40Eur at the time.

When I started collecting wines, around 2000-2001, 1997 already was the vintage to avoid. A 'restaurants vintage'. Had only a handful and never was impressed. Lighter wines; pleasant, but nothing more. 1999 OTOH turned out much better than expected.

Last two 02's I had were Barton and Clos Fourtet. Both easily 90 points. Barton always shines in lesser vintages in my book (just bought a sixpack 11's for a good price) and 02 is no exception. Clos Fourtet was a polished, slightly commercial wine. Quality crowd pleaser. 02 ain't that bad.

2014 ho-hum? Thought not. Anyway, happy with my stash of 00,05,09,10 and the occasional 03. So no need for yet another vintage to buy expensive and cellar too long. I may sniff at some 14's instead. Should be a classy vintage and, I hope, soon to be overshadowed by hypes.

Nice to read. 2000 indeed seems slightly forgotten after the various outher vintages of the millennium. The 2000 Leo-Poy I had last year was full of promise, but young. Easily a 94-95 pointer with some time. Bought mine on release and cellar them on the cold side. Reduces replacement investment too....
