although normally Pappadoc would have suggested Siran to go with this roast piglet, he served us grand cru Burgundy instead. We had to order the luckless porcine a day or two ahead of time.

PXL_20220616_232331191_2.jpg Many years ago I had inquired here on BWE over where to find La Parde de Haut Bailly, the second wine from the American banker owned property. The kommentariat had given me some leads, and I ended up picking this 2010 from JJ Buckley, and it went into the cellar, only g...

CA wine lovers typically do not like 1998 red wines from Napa and Sonoma. It is a Bordeaux lover's vintage IMO.

I picked up a 4 pack of Mikasa stemless wine tumblers, compared to Riedel 'O' series they are heavier/larger yet thinner. It seems to be a different kind of crystal, and they are from Slovakia. My perception of Mikasa had always been that they were Japanese -- we have some beautiful Mikasa Martini g...

I'm not sure how totally reliable label abv% is...there is some wiggle room there. And over very long periods of time, there is even some evaporation. We had a 70 l'Evangile ago some years with a stated abv of 11% but I suspect it was down in the ten handles given all the time that had passed by! Ad...

I had more than a few disappointing vintages of La Gaffeliere from the 90's, and generally I was only buying the better regarded / riper years too.

Between that, and the price hikes, they were put on the No Fly list without a Redress #

Tonight I had veal marsala and Lucie ate cannelloni. We drank 2008 La Gomerie. This is highly concentrated, fruity, and has solid tannins that are not yet resolved. Most of the action is up front. The wine leans toward the modern style, but is not overblown IMO. The alcohol level is listed as 14%. ...

Carl Magnus is a modern, rich Fronsac. I had the 2009 maybe last year. It looks like most of the right banks were on the newer wave side, while your Medoc's tilted traditional, generalizing.

That seems like a nice representational tasting overall though.

I hope it gets appealed, and we get a sequel of a trial. And more special FX.

My understanding is that he semi retired some ten+ years ago and has not been updating prior books.

I'm not sure the Bordeaux related books need to be updated though; the value is mostly in the history rather than specific wine commentary.

In retrospect, the 90's were much tougher than it seemed contemporaneously. Ben at CellarRaiders sent out an interesting list of wines, mostly non speculator grade, but perhaps of interest to the BWE. e.g. that 71 Gazin might be ok, as it was an ok year for Pomerol, when generally most of the dry red wines in Bordeaux were not keepers. A plus for me when in moderation. Two factors account for the diversity of opinions: 1. Variability in palate preferences and 2. Ability of Brett to grow under warmer storage conditions, increasing the effect. +1 I think the latter is a bigger deal on these older bottles. One producer that also has...
