I feel like this is a property that BWE likes more than the professionals. Personally I loved the 1990 and 2003, yet those were given tepid assessments by writers.

Re: Day out in Pessac-Léognan (13 châteaux)

The final stop of a very full day was at Château Baret in Villenave d’Ornon (24 hectares), which has been in the Ballande family since 1867. Once again, we tried both the red and white wines. The 2015 red was a good middle of the road Pessac-Léognan with a tangy flavor. It was unexpectedly tannic o...

I loved older ones but I have not tried any recent vintages. This can be a bit tougher to find out West. Still have fond memories of a case of the 1998 that DavidG physially picked up for me from a DMV merchant (who did not ship)!

Re: Pourt questions

My understanding is that typically in a declared vintage a shipper might make 3000-4000 cases of their flagship VP, at hypothetically $100 or so. And in the vintages where either quality, or market conditions, preclude declaring a VP, they will release some smaller amount of port, that is supposedly...

Wow that's a blast from the past. I went through a half case of that 2000 Reserve de Comtesse when it was young, and my recollection was that it was a bit greenish and underwhelming, especially when compared to the 1996 version of it, which was one of the best 2nd's I've had over the years.

PXL_20230830_001510154~2.jpg As I enjoy this 2000 Lafon Rochet [St Estephe] even more on the 2nd night, I'm struck what a great era that was for enthusiasts. Most wines were still priced for the 99% yet broadly available, while being made in a range of styles for whatever palate preferences one had...

PXL_20230821_011220426.jpg Over 3 nights I finished a tedious bottle of the 2001 Sociando Mallet [Haut Medoc] This was from a case that had been split with (dormant?) BWE'er brodway en primeur. I like Bojo but only keep a few bottles around at any given time, since - for my tastes - it does not keep / improve for decades. Last week I had a lovely bottle of JC Lapalu, which was on the lusher/fuller side for the region. For those on the US West Coast, K&L is currently having a promotion ...

PXL_20230818_022339745~2.jpg 2005 is turning into my favorite vintage, post 1990. I really love how almost anything opened from that year will delight as exemplified by last night's 2005 Rouget [Pomerol] . I'd held this release, purchased EP, but I don't think I'd had one yet. Re: Two fine Médocs and a reflection on vintage reputations

Although not in the league of the 2003 Mouton that AlexR mentions, this St Julien has developed better than one could have hoped/expected. There's nothing in the way it tastes at age 20 that suggests a super crazy hot year. Perhaps the 2020 vintage - another hot/drought year will be as good or better, given how vintners have learned to handle climate change

PXL_20230730_003436267~2.jpg Over three days, the 2015 Saint-Jacques de Siran [Bordeaux Superieur] is nice, but nothing memorable. The label states 14% abv, and I don't think it's a 'true' second wine, but rather a vineyard parcel near the main Siran holdings but outside Margaux AOC. There are a fe...

Some weekend wines

PXL_20230723_043340693~3.jpg 2000 Fombrauge [St Emilion] This is a Bernard Magrez wine IIRC, and despite all that may imply, was only 13.5% abv and pretty well balanced. It was decanted, for aeration and a bit of sediment, and was a good mature example of the AOC. It didn't seem to show the fruit d...

Garnacha tends to be more of a small blending element for the bodegas in Rioja Alta and RIoja Alavesa, but in Rioja Oriental (which used to be called Rioja Baja) it can be the dominant component in the blend.
