Re: Poll: What is the greatest of the five first growths?

Not easy to answer this question. A matter of personal style preferences maybe. If you prefer Pauillac wines, like I do, it comes to Latour and Lafite. If you focus on quality it is wise to focus on under the radar vintages in recent years. Lafite did poor between 60s and 81 vintage. Nothing special...

90s Mags for now and long term.
2003, 1998 and 1996 for now.
2000, 2005 and 2010 in 10 years maybe.
But my heart belongs to 97. Best value in this vintage.
89 is not bad either.
You won't find any bad vintage in Sociandos :D

Re: Getting to about that time for BWE Wine of the Year....

Guys
It should be a wine of the northern Medoc in 2014.
PLL, Calon, Montrose, Meyney.
You can' t go wrong with any of these.
I think Meyney is a no brainer.

Re: What’s your favorite modern Bordeaux?

Define "modern".
Almost all contemporary bordelaise estates use modern techniques more or less.
If you compare 60s, 70s or 80s vintage wines with wines of today you will find almost no similarities.

Most of 80s and 90s vintages.
Best wines 83, 88, 89, 96, 99, 00. Can't find any exeptional in most of the other vintages.....exept pricing. Think they are trying too hard.

Re: Getting impatient viz. the 95s and 96s

No reason getting impatient on 96s Bordeaux.
Sociando Mallet, Duhart Milon, Batailley, both Pichons, even Latour with adequate decanting offer lots of fun now. Wines like Cantemerle, Maucaillou are on or past peak now.
95 Bordeaux is a different story...not sure if they ever will show......

2000>1996. Maybe 1996 is beyond top performance now. 2000 is close to, still in its way up. Pure classizism. Lafite style in a discount price level. 2005 is a stunner too, different style in a more modern way. Strong on 1996, love this wine, but i think 2000 is better now. Drink or hold for minimal ...
