A duo of Thanksgiving wines, a treat & a disaster

The 1995 Gruaud Larose - a real treat. Perfect bottle. Real 1995 tannin & fruit combo. Boatloads of Gruaud personality a lot of secondaries: flowers, saddle leather, forest, potpourri etc. A 94 point wine with lots of life ahead & lots of character. but then...... The Meyney 2014. wtf. What ...

Hey greatbx In many ways you are right. I’m not a big taster. Prefer to enjoy the greatest wine regions bounty by the bottle at home shared with friends & family mostly around the table with food - been doing it since the late 1970’s. France Bwe 2020.......I wish!!!! I’m fairly new to this group...

Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?

The recent decade of big bdx years produced wines that are heavy, formulaic and indistinguishable from each other. I like to be able to select a Margaux that tastes like it came from Arsac or somewhere along the D2 unlike a recent d’angludet 2016 that might as well have been from Howell mountain. Fo...

Not sure who needs to line up for Fr. Flaneurs confessionals or who incurred the wrath of JH on the passive aggressive front. I was super hyped to join the group on this bdx trip but not realizing the fellowship extended to so many long timers. So, should any of the top 20 dropout and I could be add...

2006’s - At 13 - kinda tasty right now. Saturating fruit & quite creamy so still youthful, the 2006s can be broached over the next few years. Proviso....Limited tastings! But A Prieure Lichine 06 & a Carbonieux 06 both revealing youthful dark fruit character with a modern spin but in a good ...

Love port but only well aged, vintage & esp around the holidays....but in small quantities. Gary’s note above, right on the money for me, with Graham’s ( loved 83, now love 85 )one of my favs. I’m a fan of half bottles as you can let sit for a few weeks over the hols & dip in, now & again...

Not one to admit to getting older but......if I could also lobby for a more leisurely agenda. Having a free afternoon midweek away from the vineyards would help reboot the system also.
Some Château lunch/dinners a must.
Otherwise good to go with the flow.

Re: Tasting from unfashionable vintages from the 1990s

A tasting for the bravest amongst us. I’m an off vintage buyer but having lived through these wines I ranked it as a low in the Bordeaux repertoire. I’d love to know from anyone who lived through the joys of young 70s Bordeaux to see how they compared - young. I disagree that these wines were better...

I usually go cold turkey in January due to a bit of over indulgence around the holidays. Also will avoid for a few weeks throughout the year just for the rest. Interesting. I’ve had such variation with the 1996. Absolutely agree with the superiority of the Leovils but for a lot more $. Beychevelle seems to have moved up the pyramid. Ch Lagrange St Julien under or over performer....

I say Over but qpr is a big component. I first got switched on to St Julien in the form of 1989 Beychevelle. In its youth, a to die for wine with all the AOC typicity but with less power than the leovils & balanced finesse in spades. Around that time, early 90s , I happened upon a stash of 85 &a...

Always have a soft spot for 1990. Something distinctive about the richness of the fruit that’s almost always recognizable. A previous bottle of this, perhaps a little excessively consumed, gave rise to a bleary morning after so this one approached with trepidation. Very dark color showing little of i...

A Labegorce for the long haul. Very 2005 style of vintage in the polished creamy mode but giving little in the way of joy at present. Lovely youthful color, looking like it may taste medium or like a good burgundy. Nose needs a bit of poking to reveal the red fruits & a little Margaux whiff of th...
