Re: Special Birthday Dinner at Annabelle’s in DC
Thanks for posting Brian! I Def preferred the Dom over the Cristal. As for the Burgs, I felt bad but I loved the '78 Beze best of the burgs, even at the end of the night and it ended up being my WOTN. The Ponsot was IMHO also better than the DRC. The La Mission was my fav of the heavier wines, basic...

Re: Dueling First Growth Fun
Fun night. My tops were the '85 Mouton, '90 Mouton, and the '93 Haut Brion. Its weird. I didn't love the grower champagnes, but I am generally not a fan of most growers. I liked the Clouet 1911 the best although it was too young.

Under $40 (US) bordeaux that's still classic?
So I need to backfill some daily drinkers from 2019+ as well as buy dailies for the next few vintages. What producers are still pretty classic over the last few years? I've heard Lanessan went spoofilated, so whats left that is medium bodied, not high alcohol, and doesnt have super extracted black f...

I love love love Etnan wines. Its interesting how the producers have divided, some a bit more robust fruit, some lighter. Some of my favs are: Vino di Anna (Anna Maartens), Frank Cornelisssen, Terre Nere, I Custodi, Calabretta I have alot of Passopisciaro, but I find it a bit too modern and I just d...

It was a good dinner, Marc is really generous. The Petit Village, the VCC, and the Mouton were brought by other people other than Marc. I definitely thought these '82s showed better than the ones back in 2022. The Pichon Lalande was my fav early on, but it sorta fell off. My surprises of the night w...

Re: Which producer was your gateway into the perils of red burgundy?
Wait, so everyone here are saying their gateway burgundy was stuff like Rousseau, DRC, Coche-drury, etc? THOSE were your first burgs? jeez. Thats like saying I didnt like Bordeaux until I tasted Lafite. Mine was a bit more humble. I first got hooked when I had an mid-aged Albert Morot 1er red burgun...

If we have another dinner where it would be an appropriate wine, I'll open one of the '83 Raffaults I have left.
But the Raffaults will never have the fruit level of Baudry or Breton.

I have to say, I've had the LB back to the 82 and I've just never been blown away by the wine. The '82 the other week was certain good, but not the best of the lot. I want to love it, but I guess I've never had the right bottle.

I have a pristine-looking magnum of the 82 Beychevelle I’m saving for some BWE gathering. That would be good test I think, if it is fading en magnum all bets would be off. I do agree about the 82 Gruaud— while fully mature, that wine is still at the peak of its powers. Well, we just had an '82 Beyc...

Re: My first Durand failure
I've had a Durand fail on a couple wines, mostly from the 60s and early 70s. Usually it was because the cork was so soft portions of it crumbled on the axis opposite of the Ah-so portion. I've also had it fail when someone used a normal cork and it broke low in the bottle. Most times I can catch it ...

Great Night!! Of the Champagnes, I think the Although I loved all the first growths, I really loved how some of the humbler wines showed. It was a real privilege to have so many great wines in one place! My first real tastes of Lafite and Cheval Blanc, so great on that! I was really surprised at how...

I've never been a huge fan of Boeajolais as well, but Marcus S brought a Foillard Morgan 3.14 (Pi) to a tasting a few years back. I've never had such an elegant beaujolais. The price of that unicorny wine has been through the roof. Any recs on another wine that's similar?
