Sounds like you had better luck with the ‘82 La Lagune than I did. De fargues is one of my favorites but difficult to find. Nice notes!

Deep purple color. Definite roast beef nose. Still a bit hot but a nice hot that integrates well with the fruit. Dark fruits like blackberry come thru but more meaty notes than something you get from a Bordeaux. I’ve been disappointed with Rhône wines lately but this was quite nice.

Re: The reality about 2016
I bought a number of Tuscan 2016's, mostly based on my delight with how the 2010's have been evolving. Sangiovese is a bit more drinkable in our heat out here, than Bordeaux or Rhone which are more our Fall/Winter fare. I went overboard on Tuscan 2016 wines based on how much I loved the 2010s, too....

Two Bordeaux recently at a dinner
1982 Vieux Chateaux Certan. Took a while to open up but showed a nose like my Potting Shed. Some celery and smoke. A bit past prime
1988 Lafaurie Peyraguey. A long time favorite Sauternes of mine. Honeyed sweetness. Beautifii up wine.

Re: So what have you bought lately?
I’m cutting back on purchases, no more room in cellar, but I had to take advantage of the RMN 30% cash back and coupons on WDC. Cherry picked: 2010 Branon 2016 Montrose 2009 Pichon Baron And got an offer for some 1996 and 2005 BAMA and Some Dehours Oeil de Perdrix Rose Champ Trying to decide to get ...

Re: So what have you bought lately?
I rarely go to Total Wine but I was over in the McLean VA area and stopped in. Picked up a 2009 Lynch Bages for $238. Clerk there showed me how to work their discounts! And since I was in the area, I stopped off at a little store called Chain Bridge Cellars, small but interesting selection. I picked...

Re: 2004 SHL and my buying strategy at age 60.
1982 Bordeaux is great now, plenty of ripe fruit, most of the better ones in early to mid secondary stage, no tertiaries yet. Stu Agree 100%. I've had some great 1982's, and I pick them up when I can. I have also had a couple bottles of 1981 Chateau Haut-Bailly which are fabulous. I'm hit or miss w...

1 x 1985 Figeac for 115 2 x 1982 La Lagune for 95 each 2 x 1976 Lafite for 399 each 6 x 2016 Xavier Gerard St-Joseph for 27.5 each All in £ and all ex-tax I had an '82 La Lagune recently from my cellar. It did not age well, we dumped most of it. Maybe it was a bad bottle. I hope yours are better

Re: The Great 2022 Wine Buying Freeze has begun!
I have not purchased anything and I’ve been very tempted. I gave up Cedric Bouchard and Ulysses Collin offers as well as my Kistler and Aubert allocations. So, I just make lists of things I want for Feb 1st!

Re: The Great 2022 Wine Buying Freeze has begun!
I still haven’t purchased anything although it was difficult turning down Cedric Bouchard and Ulysse Collin offers. I’m on a freeze because I have absolutely no room left and I’m getting shipments from purchases last year that are piling up outside the cellar door. I’m also limiting wine to the week...

Re: What are we drinking in the Omicron ominous?
Opened a 2005 La Chablisienne Les Preuses for my pork, kielbasa, and sauerkraut New Years dinner. Pretty good, but not as big or typical of Chablis from that vintage I’ve had. I’ve always liked this coop but they could have done better with a grand cru.

NYE Champagne Dinner
Another wine dinner hosted by Eric! Lots of caviar, cheese, crab cakes, mac and cheese, cool veggies, and chocolate pie. This time for New Year’s we focused on Champagne! The group was careful with COVID protocols but I do think this will be the last get together for a while until Omnicron settles d...

And I’m definitely on a wine buying...

Truffle Dinner in D.C. - Piedmont vs Tuscany
Eric and Janet hosted a wonder truffle dinner for us to showcase wines from both Piedmont and Tuscany. This group likes their bottles really mature! I think I had the youngest bottles. It certainly opened my eyes to some things: I like Barolo old too! I still like my Brunello's young. I should be bu...

Re: Classic Bordeaux - Who Are The Remaining Stalwarts
A prior poster asked about Giscours. I do not think it is classic, nor do I think it is “modern” in the pejorative way that some of us use that term as applied to wine, but it does fall into that third bucket that Marcs mentions. It is well made from a technical point of view, IMHO, and actually ta...

Thanks so much to Joel for arranging this and introducing us to a new restaurant. All the wines were on target - I didn't dump any! Some of my notes Both the Champagnes were very nice upon opening. The Larmandier in my opinion tended to wane a bit over time. I brought that and was expecting more of ...
