Re: BWE DC Convention and COVID

Although I can't make it I appreciate the informative post! Have a great time. (My employer just decided yesterday to postpone our RTO plan) I'll second that. A very considered and informative post David. Would have loved to meet you all - reading through the various planning posts definitely leave...

Re: German wine epiphanies over the weekend….

Apologies for digging up an old thread here, but I thought I'd mention that the 2019 vintage for German Rieslings is been heralded as the best since 01. Very favourable reports from various commentators: https://www.jamessuckling.com/wine-tasting-reports/2019-germanys-100-point-vintage/ https://www....

Re: What's the first "wine" you ever drank?

Does Blue Nun even qualify as a wine?
If yes, then Blue Nun, circa 1999 - not an experience worth sharing

Re: (NYT) Dining: A Wine Worth Waiting For

What I do find slightly frustrating however is the increased frequency in declaring a vintage potentially legendary. Since the turn of the century, there has been a rush to declare seven different vintages as the "potential vintage of the century" (00, 05, 09, 10, 15, 16, 18). There is lit...

Re: (NYT) Dining: A Wine Worth Waiting For

For sure Jim...I have a few bottles of 05 LLC and I reckon they will remain in the dark corner of the cellar for another 15 years!! At least. Interesting article, although not sure I agree with the conclusion. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure we've all taken immense pleasure from the more accessible vin...

Thanks for the welcome David, and for the advice.

I'll probably add to my initial selection and just have some fun along the way.

Re: Travel Wine Carrier

I recently picked up the 6 bottle version of Vino-Voyage 2.0 when last in the States - it's available on the Wine Enthusiast website. Very happy with it thus far, albeit I've only used it the once. Its sturdy and can accommodate bottles of various sizes, and comes in a 6 and 12 bottle version - the ...

Re: (IND) 12 best Portuguese wines to transport you to a sun-soaked vineyard

Portugal is really interesting region...the quality of the dry wines have improved enormously over the past decade or so. Barca Velha is the undoubted jewel in the crown, but is priced accordingly. The "Unico" of Portugal, it's released only in exceptional years (only 20 releases since the...

Re: Buying 2020 futures is hard to justify.

Some great choices Nick, DdC and Nénin were my sole purchases from 2020. I'm hearing mix reviews of the 2020's, particularly Cab Sav dominant blends...it appears some got caught out by the rains in mid Sept. Merlot faired somewhat better as many were harvested before the weather changed. These views...

Re: Killer frost hits Bordeaux vineyards

Ya I saw that alright...not always effective though, depending on how bad the frost is. Some even burn bales of hay, in Burgundy in particular...and yet still suffered a total loss!! While some of the larger estates can probably survive a lost vintage, you'd have to imagine many of the smaller estat...

Re: Killer frost hits Bordeaux vineyards

Haven't see an update on this in a few months - did Bordeaux manage to escape relatively unharmed? I'm sure some have been impacted more than others. Do we know if any estates had a total loss? Izak, have you spoken with any Bordelais over the past few weeks about the impact of the frosts? The pictu...

Re: Building a vertical

Thanks for all the input and advice thus far, it's been really helpful. JCKBA, where possible I've tried to follow your advise: "pick a Bdx estate that you (1) currently like (2) would expect to improve with age and (3) can easily afford and to go for it" As with all things Bordeaux, it's ...

Re: Building a vertical

I would separate out building a vertical from experiencing a vertical. I get huge value from knowing an estate in detail. I don't care about having the wines in my cellar. Let's take the example of Lynch Bages referenced above (understanding that it is now too expensive for most mortals to collect)...

Re: Building a vertical

Personally I think it makes more sense to assemble verticals in estates that tend to be hard to find after release. Ch. Musar might be an example of one, or Mas de Daumas Gassac. And although not Bordeaux, they are blends that might be of interest to enthusiasts. That's a great suggestion Arv, and ...

Re: Building a vertical

My philosophy in verticals is avoid the bad or really lesser vintages. Hi Glenn - thanks for the feedback. I had assumed for true verticals that the run should be unbroken, regardless of vintage quality - possibly not a golden rule, and for sure would be difficult to part with hard earned cash for ...

Re: Building a vertical

Welcome Conor, and thanks for your thoughtful post. I'm sure the group will have some worthwhile suggestions. Wines like Calon Segur, Cantemerle, Giscours, have been favorites of mine in recent years, as well as Corbin, Tour Saint Christophe, and others. Quality, ageability, and generally decently ...
