Re: Trumped up TN's from casual dinners at home

Michael - you have a diverse palate. Thanks for the notes.

I've been interested in trying the '06 Felsina Rancia after enjoying the '04 version early after release (it is in a muted stage now). From your notes, it sounds like '06 Felsinas may take time to come around.

Re: Bordeaux Supérieur = A.O.C. Bordeaux Grand Cru?

But is it superior?

If they wanted to sell to "Chinamen" perhaps they could create a Lafite appellation. For Hoboken, I'm not sure.....

Re: Zachy's 2006 Bordeaux sale

I see that Pops has a sale on 2006s. It appears prices have come a long ways down from en primeur; some are even near market. I'm almost tempted, however with a full cellar of 2005s, and 2008s being even less expensive, I'm inclined to hold off on '06s.

Re: TN 2005 Ampelia (Cotes de Castillon)

I enjoyed Ampelia after the first day. Like many '05s it is ripe, yet a refreshing balance of acidity. I purposely acquired a few wines from many of the Bordeaux AOC in 2005, and for Cotes de Castillon ended up with this along with Joanin Becot and d'Aiguilhe. Alex, do you have some recommendations ...

TN 2005 Ampelia (Cotes de Castillon)

95% merlot, 5% cab franc. Night 1 this was very disjointed. A glossy purple-black appearance, the nose was a mixture of vanilla, plum and strawberry. Fruit forward, medium bodied, with a somewhat course mouth feel of oak and tannin that has a slight bite to it. On nights 2 and 3 (overnight in refrig...

Re: 89 Langoa Barton / 89 Léoville Barton

Is the blend the same? I thought the vineyards at Langoa had about 10% cab franc, and Leoville-Barton has no cab franc but more petit verdot, but I don't know the specific blend.

Re: WSJ critics are thumbs down on 2006 first growths

I enjoy their articles, but as discussed in a long ago thread, Brecher and Gaiter, although professionals and critics, are aiming for a how-does-it-taste-now crowd rather than an evaluation of how the wine may evolve.....so I don't see too much conflict in their poor reviews and other critics outsta...

TN: 2005 Taupenaut-Merme Passetoutegrains

We've had a summer-long heat wave in the Northwestern US. This is one red wine that is quite refreshing. Nice nose that is a mix of raspberry and strawberry, that with air has a little bit of liqueur-like sweetness but is very fresh. In the mouth this opened up with nice clarity and concentration of...

Re: Looks like RP likes 2008

Richard: Parker made comments on 2005 including "this is the greatest vintage produced during my 30-year career" so I don't think he was overall out of step with other critics, however there were some differences (I'd consider minor); he didn't give any first growths perfect scores, he ini...

Binny's is having a sale on French wines....huge discounts on some wines. Many '05s. Consumers will have lots of choices....a buyer's market, if you will.

Re: Looks like RP likes 2008

Actually most of the European reviewers are very strong on the vintage.....maybe not as charismatically strong as RP, but JR, Quarin, and others (see www.bordoverview.com for ratings) give quite a few wines strong reviews. Here's the free (cheap?) comments from JR: http://www.jancisrobinson.com/arti...

Re: Looks like RP likes 2008

I haven't read a lot of the other critics reviews, but I did read WS; JS likened the vintage to approaching the 2006 level, good but not outstanding, there were very few reviews (3) that at the top end of the range exceeded 95, and as I recall there was some concern about the high acidity. RP had a ...

Looks like RP likes 2008

The extent of the high reviews for 2008 surprised me, from all the weather reports. Good job Izak and others who tasted and reported --- your reviews were not far off Parkers. I wasn't going to purchase futures, but....I can see a few relative values, maybe Pichon Lalande at $59.... With the high Po...

TN 2007 Perrin CdR Reserve Rouge

At a dinner function last night (guest speaker was Charles Simonyi talking about his 2nd Soviet space trip earlier this month) we were served this '07 Rhone. Dark red, glossy, nose of cherry and light pepper, this was medium bodied, ripe cherry and cassis in a delicious balance, with tannins well in...

Harry - You can't beat a favourable comment like that from the world's leading wine critic (and Rhone enthusiast). I'm also looking forward to reading it. Yes, it has been awhile since I've posted.....since the transition to the new site. I like the layout, editing, easy login and other functions. M...

Re: 2006 Bordeaux?

50% off some of the lower tier wines is a good deal. As you move up in price, the 2006s were so overpriced that 50% doesn't quite cut it for me, and the 2008s pre-arrivals are less expensive as they roll out. That's going to put some serious pricing pressure on those in the trade holding 2006s. I've...
