Yeah, Obama is preaching change, ethics in government... unless it applies to his appointees, then we set different rules. Hypocrite.

His name was Vincent "Buddy" Cianci Jr. He was mayor of Providence from 1975 to 1984, and then again from 1991 to 2002. From Wikopedia: Cianci was forced by law to resign from office for the first time in 1984 after pleading no contest to assaulting a man with a lit cigarette, an ashtray a...

Re: TNs: Various Bordeaux 1953-1990

I don't think you should apologize for it either, Otto! I like a certain level of greenness and austerity as well. I haven't had the '90 Pichon Lalande in over a decade, it may be that the wine was just so significantly different then from the other Bordeaux of the '80s, a lot of which I was drinkin...

That's what I like best about Harry's notes. He's a wine enthusiast. His approach is glass-half-full. He finds the good things in the wines he drinks, the unique descriptors. Francois is like that as well, Parker too.

Top restaurants make Providence, R.I., worth visit BY MIKE QUANE Sunday, July 13th 2008, 4:00 AM Federal Hill in Providence's 'Little Italy' Some cities are worth visiting just for their outstanding restaurants, and Providence, R.I., certainly fits into that category. For years I used to pass throu...

Dining in Providence, Rhode Island

Despite being a lifelong New Englander, I had never been to Providence, Rhode Ialand, before last night. The place has always had a reputation as a gritty kind of town, but my anecdotal impressions seem consistent with the reputation for fine cuisine that the city has been cultivating in recent deca...

Re: TNs: Various Bordeaux 1953-1990

I wonder why there is such a wide disparity of opinion about the 1990 Pichon Lalande? I recall drinking about three bottles of that wine in my earlist experiences with Bordeaux, long before I ever heard of Robert Parker, let alone his 79 point rating of the wine. I thought it was extremely thin and ...

Yeah when I buy a wine like this I'm not expecting anything profound, I'm just looking for something pleasant, not offensive, best case it goes well with dinner. That '07 Rhone, though, I'm telling you, is an Alchemeus-type-of-wine!

Re: TN: 2006 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet (Australia, South Eastern)

I know virtually nothing about this estate, Alch, but it was like 10 bucks at PJs and it garnered a 90 point Wine Advocate rating, so I figured what do I have to lose. The wine is a solid, no-nonsense effort. Not a 90 pointer, but a worthy change of pace. We uncorked another bottle of that 2007 La G...
