Re: Which is better, Lytton Springs or Geyserville?

Yeah, funny that the vote is so lopsided yet so many who have commented said they preferred Geyserville by a tiny margin. I suspect if we all scored them on a 100-point scale, it would come out something like Geyserville 94.6, Lytton Springs 94.4. I wonder if there’s a simple way to look up an avera...

Re: Too much wine space--what should I do?

That price looks good, CV; only about $2/bottle. Even if the price has tripled it is much better to ship than to sell and rebuy. David, I want to avoid us moving much wine from Texas to Oregon ourselves. Our backs and joints are not up to it. I bought enough wine for Oregon that we have enough wine...

Tried to vote 4 or 5 times and kept changing my mind. Eventually settled on Geyserville. Twenty or thirty years ago I would have easily chosen Lytton. Not that the wines were that different then, but I was.

Re: Too much wine space--what should I do?

Bill, are you asking whether to move the wine or how to move the wine to OR? That’s a trickier question than what to do with the storage cabinets. I would keep the storage cabinets in OR - you’ll eventually need them - and wouldn’t worry about whether you use them now or later. Whatever’s convenient...

Patrick, that’s a good point about sticky prices/initial conditions. That usually seems to dissipate by 10-15 years post vintage. We’re not quite there yet with the 2014s and 2015s.

Re: Finally: 2014 VCC Versus 2014 La Conseillante.

I agree with Jim that 2015s cost more because they got higher scores from critics, and that those scores were higher because the wines were riper than 2014s. I don’t share the apparent disdain for people who actually like that style. The secondary market continues to value most 2015s more than the 2...

Ed, that’s one of the big things that worries me about AI: making it easier to fake stuff. The other thing that worries me is that many accept the output of an AI engine like ChatGPT as the unvarnished truth. I’ve seen incorrect medical advice given by physicians who asked ChatGPT for information an...

It finally happened. I’ve reached that old man get-off-my-lawn, yelling-at-clouds stage of life. It was one specific thing that made me realize it. Historically, Cantemerle is a wine that can be drunk young. Has anyone tried the 2014 Nameless Wine recently? Usually it takes longer to come around than Cantemerle, but the wonderful 1996 was good at age five and never weakened. 2014 Nameless Haut-Médoc (1/7/2023): This took about an hour to open ...

Styles does go on a bit. But he’s asking a legitimate question: were the wines acidified? My guess is that it’s exceedingly difficult or impossible to tell if a wine has had tartaric acid additions by tasting barrel samplings. More importantly, if the wines’ pHs were adjusted by adding acid, how wou...

You guys both nailed it. Guigal’s La-Las are really special, but lose their specialness if drunk too often. Hardly much risk of that at today’s prices.

The 85s were pretty awesome a decade ago. I’m not surprised they’re still kicking ass.

I don’t think it’s fair to paint all retailers dealing in Bdx futures with the scam brush. The system sucked the financial advantage out of futures years ago (2019 being an exception). For me precision is a combination of structure and flavor. Comparing the 2009 and 2018, with the 2009 the structure allowed each flavor and nuance to come through clearly while with 2018 it was muddied, everything coming together into an and anonymous single note. It is often, but not always, a pro...
