I don’t drink that many Cru Bourgeois. I tried a bunch of them in the '80s and was generally unimpressed, so I’d been avoiding them. Started buying a few in the riper/better years and it appears they have upped their game.

So two 2015 Bordeaux, not the cream of the crop but decent solid wines, came across as too tannic at 3 years old.

This does not elicit a Chicken Little response from me.

Do you recall when you went from simply being afraid to understanding the questions it raised? Or was it simultaneous? Well, you made me look... The Astounding She-Monster and the 2000 Gruaud Larose both opened a bit thin and weak, leaving me wondering where they would go and whether I’d made a mistake. At the end of an hour the Gruaud had blossomed into a wonderfully aromatic, medium bodied and beautifully balanced...

Marcus, I agree that there are other factors. Exercise can contribute more than simply calories burned during the activity. A fit person may burn more calories at rest than someone with more fat and less muscle. Simple carbs/high glycemic index foods are worse metabolically than complex carbs. Vario...

Another manifestation of WBD (wine buying disorder). Common in younger and middle-aged wine enthusiasts at the peak of their earning power, sometimes the only cure is running out of storage space or a spousal ultimatum. CV's advice is good. Sometimes works even after the fact if there are a lot of l...

I hear you Jacques. I think road cycling has a high risk of injury/miles traveled compared to a lot of other aerobic exercises. A shame because it had been one of my favorites: great workout, low impact on the joints, nice pace through the countryside which kept it from being boring or repetitive. W...

Four reasons I disagree with the article’s conclusion that wine is a good investment: 1) That’s John Kapon, Rudy auctioneer extraordinaire, giving advice in the video. 2) It’s easy to look like a genius investment advisor when you can pick and choose from retrospective data. 3) People making money i...

Less calories in. More calories out. All of the above are variations on that theme. What works best for me may not work well for someone else. I’d rather be 20 pounds overweight than use Bill's method, but he didn’t have a choice. For me, cutting out wine helped me lose 17 pounds in about 5 months. ...

The stacking option makes it pretty tough to retrieve bottles if your back goes bad as you get older. So you’re right again, it’s not solely a space problem, but if you value the flexibility of pulling what you want when you want, stacking may lose its appeal over time. This is where a butler would ...

It’s not just about the space, it’s also about priorities.
And consideration for another.
If I were single I’d have a walk-in cellar in the new place.
I wouldn’t have sold off as big a chunk of the cellar.
But there are some things in life that are more important.

Nice report Ian. I sold off the bulk of my 1995s when eventually my need for cellar space (and crazy prices for first growths) overtook my patience. Still have a few Clinet in the cellar. I think they are getting there complexity-wise and have the fruit to outlast the tannins.
