Re: BWE DC '09: Saturday Night Wines

Stefan, my philosophy is - whatever the group wants and can provide will be just fine. There will be about 25 of us there. We'll have 2 bottles of each of the 6 wines for the blind tasting - enough for a 1.5 to 2-oz pour for everyone. For dinner, I think it would be nice if there were at least a few...

Re: TN: Le Mesnil, '05 Jadot, '00 Cristia

I've had the Le Mesnil before and found it more fruit-centric than bready/yeasty, with medium weight. A good/very good wine but not great, and not my ideal style. I seem to remember it was a pretty good value - this was probably 10 years ago.

Re: FLASH: Unidentified BWE Signs Fighters for DC '09 Bouts

I think "organized mayhem" might be be the best descriptor of the wine themes for the big BWE convention dinners. We try to co-ordinate multiple bottles of at least a few wines so that everyone gets to share and talk about a common tasting experience, but beyond that, it's pretty much a fr...

Re: 1998 Ch. Léoville Barton

Alain, I agree with your take on the '98 RB vs LB characteristics. That slightly green/vegetal component appeals to some more than others. My appreciation for veggies is limited but not zero. For those who like it more, '98 RB is a pretty good vintage and an even better deal. Of course, just about a...

Robert, welcome to BWE!

It may be a long wait for the SQN list, but with the economy in the dumps, the list should turn over more quickly. Definitely worth it in my opinion. Manfred's release letters are a joy in and of themselves. And then there's the wine...

Re: The world is crashing, but Carruades holding firm

All this silliness made me look on Wine Searcher. While there are 3 stores in the US offering this at $109-$126 (as if that's a deal!?!), indeed there are about 9 US listings at $250 or more per bottle. Hard to believe the 2.5x price differential. Do you think they are actually selling at that price...

Re: I just tripled my red Burgundy holdings...

Harry, I'm guessing you will be proven right. Something tells me these aren't going to be reminiscent of the bottles we drank at Ch de Beaune in '05. Claudius - Wow, that's a lot of '05 Burg! Or is it partly an investment? When I go big on a region in a particular vintage, it's more like 5 cases, bu...

Give it some time and try again. I wonder if this time of year is always bad for Bdx for you, how is it for other wines? Could your palate be off a bit, perhaps from the changing weather or allergies? Or is it just Bdx?

Re: When Pride downed the Mission

I'll admit a soft spot for Pride, though I dropped off the list a few years ago. They seem to do well in "off" years, and great in "on" years, but you do have to like the style to enjoy them. Agree that over the years the La Miss will keep getting better while the Pride will just...

Re: When Pride downed the Mission

I don't find this surprising at all. The up front fruit of a California Cab will frequently overwhelm the more subtle complexity of a Bordeaux. Particularly if the Bdx is still too young to display its full complement of secondary and tertiary aromas and flavors. I'm reading future improvement into ...

Sounds like the deck may be stacked against these wines at this point in time. Which is just what I need. A bunch of '05 Burgs that aren't showing well, so I can remain smugly confident in my preference for Bordeaux and Rhone, thus avoiding another expensive cellar expansion. Not to mention an oppor...

I don't know if these were good prices or not, but the Potel was $45 and the Clos Salomon was $30. I'm looking forward to trying these and your NH Collection. I'm also tempted to bring some similarly-priced '05 Bdx to put up against these BWE WsOTY, but it all comes down to which samples you pick. S...

It's about 3 hours, I think, a little faster on the Acela (but a lot more expensive).

Would love to see some of our NYC and Carolina friends...

Even though the "deadline" has passed, the room can hold up to 10-12 more people, and we can add people up to a week or so before the event.

BWE '07 Sat night Champagnes

I don't think we need to be too organized about the Champagnes for the Saturday night welcome hour at Charlie Palmer, but if folks would like to post what they'll be bringing, we can get an idea of whether we've got enough lined up. I figure about 8 bottles should do it.

Recent conversations with the Charlie Palmer staff indicate that things are shaping up nicely. We should have a good supply of decent-sized Bordeaux stems - enough for 3 for each person.
