Thank you Alex. Some of your notes make me wish I was younger and still buying young Bordeaux.

Great start with the right-bankers Izak. Sounds like everyone made good wine despite your comments about less consistency. Unless you haven’t gotten around to posting on the lesser performers. Proce reductions are good news for consumers. I was heartened to see that Angelus continues to maintain som...

Re: 2020 Bordeaux prices...
Depends on what time frames you look at. The 2019s were substantially less than 2020s en primeur. Since their initial offerings, the 2019s increased in cost more than the 2020s, so they’re now comparable. Generally speaking (there are always exceptions), 2019 was perhaps the only vintage in the last...

Jim I couldn’t say it better. RP, yesterday Goldman Sachs says the S&P has done about all it’s likely to do this year, then a “good” CPI number comes out today and the S&P rockets to a new high. It’s all a big guessing game. I’m not impressed that the chief guessers do a whole lot better tha...

Re: 2000 Sociando Mallet
Friends opened a bottle of 2000 SM last night. Promising on the nose but tired on the palate. The green streak was there but at just the right level to add interest and complexity. But the fruit had faded. Just one bottle and at 24 years not necessarily representative (though well stored) of the ent...

Re: 2020 Chateau La Lagune revisited: This wine is absolutely gorgeous....
Are $40-50 wines from 2019 and 2020 better than first growths from the 90s or oughts? Discuss If we’re ignoring inflation, give me first growths from the better years of the 80s-00s. Might I change my mind in 10-15 years when the 2019 and 2020 $40-50 wines are mature? Maybe, but I doubt it. Would b...

I think they'd fit right in with the Three Stooges Wine Rating System. Something along the lines of a triple Curly with a Woo-Woo-Woo.

Re: Points, scores, and ratings
I grew up on Parker and was quite the acolyte in the ‘80s. The 100-point system made sense, but I was never able to rate wines that precisely, even if using only 85-100. Sure, I could do it with a group of wines in front of me at one sitting. But I couldn’t be sure that today’s 92 would consistently...

In my experience, Coravin works reliably for a week, maybe two. Which should be enough in most cases. Beyond that is hit or miss. Repour is my choice for preserving bottles that we’ll consume over the course of a week. Cheaper and simpler. For a robust wine that will be finished the next day I’ll of...

Re: Weekly Poll: What is your favorite Medoc appellation?
I was gonna say Pessac is south of the Medoc but I see Stefan beat me to it. By 6 years. Since it was an available choice, I picked it. Which made the job a lot easier. In the Medoc, I could give you a different answer each day of the week. Most days it would be Pauillac, with St Julien close behind...

Not wine related, other than the Sun being responsible for ripening the grapes…
I was fiddling with exposure settings in preparation for next month’s eclipse when I had an unexpected visitor.

Re: Oh my Devil, the catastrophic St Émilion tasting
Bummer, Nic, but thanks for the report. I haven’t had the 2005 Belair but it sounds like a number of other overdone 2005 St Ems, Bellevue Mondotte being the poster child of RP100s that jumped the shark. JC, I actually enjoyed the 2005 Larcis Ducasse. Though it was very ripe, lush, and modern, it was...

Nice ramblings Jim. I agree with you on 2016. I hope you are right on 2019 as I have a fair number but have tasted only a few on release. Very appealing but I have trouble predicting the future on such young wines. By the way, sending you one of these as you’ve apparently lost yours. IMG_0465....

You can get recent auction hammer prices on CellarTracker (I don’t think they include buyer’s premium) and compare to Wine Searcher retail prices.

Re: 2005 Bordeaux revisited.
I’ve had plenty of bottles show better on day 2. The 2005 Angelus was poor on opening, fair a couple of hours later, and excellent the following day. I don’t think that a young wine oxidizes that fast. Not much oxygen gets into it just sitting there in the bottle. Nor do I think that improvement on ...

2005 Angelus : I approached my first bottle of this with some trepidation after a few other 2005 St. Emilions disappointed due to heavy over-extraction and overripe fruit. Immediately on opening the nose and palate hit me with raisiny sweetness, glossy ripe fruit, good acidity and tannins. I leave ...

Same reaction here. They describe well what I am getting out of the 2014s. I found their comparison to 2002 interesting. Jim was a big fan of 2002. I thought he was unduly influenced by the MacArthur heist. To me at the time they were too lean and reserved. Over the years my preferences shifted. I r...
