Every Bordeaux vintage has winners and losers (maybe not 1956).
If you bring it, we will drink it. Enthusiastically!

Re: 1987 Niepoort Garrafeira in Porto

Fascinating report. Sounds like an excellent visit! I wonder if there would be a difference between a Colheita aged X years in wood and then Y years in bottle after release, and a Garrafeira aged X years in wood and Y years in a glass Demi-John prior to release. One of the most intoxicating port exp...

I hear ya Jim. At 68 now, I decided a couple of years ago that 2019 would be my last Bordeaux vintage. Even that may be aspirational. But it didn’t stop me from backfilling 2009s-2010s and 2014s-2016s.

Jim, I don’t think there’s been a single time in this 142-page, 8 1/2 year old thread when I’ve been as fully in agreement with you as in the post above. In addition to Pennsylvania, I worry about Michigan.

Odd first post. Are you for real?
What kind of wine business?
I think Ace of Spades and Cristal have captured that market.
Plus, you can’t saber or shake up a bottle of Bordeaux and spray it all over your bootylicious friends.

Re: 1994 Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet

The Montelena Estate is one of my favorite Napa cabs. I’ve been buying them since 1984. It’s also a beautiful place to visit. A picnic lunch on one of the little islands there on a sunny day before or after a tasting is pretty sweet.

Re: 2009 Chateau Calon Segur has been uncorked and other ramblings....

Well, I went ahead and popped one. Very nice forward nose right out of the gate, with cassis, cherry, smoky earthy notes and a hint of leafy herbs. Lots of ripe polished fruit on the palate, decent balance but on the soft side, though there seem to be enough tannins to give it legs. Consistent with ...

Re: 2009 Chateau Calon Segur has been uncorked and other ramblings....

I’ve got a couple bottles of ‘09 Calon Segur. Would have thought it should be open for business at 15 years. I’m kinda confused by your note. Starts out strong, then opens up, complex, youthful, offering a lot… and then jammy, unexciting. A bit of Jekyll and Hyde all in one evening. Your note has me...

It was great to see Jim in his natural habitat. What a beautiful setting. The steaks, 2008 Dom, and 1996 Lafite were all superb. It was the full-on Jim How experience. I’d had the Dom before and it was its usual excellent self. It was my first time with the 1996 Lafite… what can I say. The nose real...

There will no doubt be serious discussion of the state of the Democratic party and indeed the future of the republic over some fine Northern Medocs on that hallowed back deck in Lewiston, where all the political nabobs make pilgrimage to consult with legendary political kingmaker Jimmy “LB” How.

Jim Thai food and wine are hard to match but obviously it depends on what it is. I don’t usually drink wine with anything with chili in it. It just kills wine flavours particularly added to heavy sauces like coconut based. I think Syrah/Shiraz is a better match with spices and I like them with Indi...

I have 8 mixed cases worth of 2016 Bordeaux. More than any other vintage currently on hand, in part because I haven’t opened many yet. Mostly 3s, 4s, and 6s and a mix of EP and post-release purchases. My only 2016 FGs are 3 bottles of Haut Brion. Something about that Pessac profile that I just can’t...

What a great evening! Lobster and a great white Burgundy are a match made in heaven. Alas, only memories since we’re off of shellfish. I have very high hopes for the 2016s.
