We’re headed to Dallas to visit Peggy’s family, then a place near the centerline. Much greater chance of clouds in April than for the 2017 eclipse in August. Fingers crossed!

Re: Weekly Poll: What is your favorite Medoc appellation?

I was gonna say Pessac is south of the Medoc but I see Stefan beat me to it. By 6 years. Since it was an available choice, I picked it. Which made the job a lot easier. In the Medoc, I could give you a different answer each day of the week. Most days it would be Pauillac, with St Julien close behind...

Eclipse preparation

Not wine related, other than the Sun being responsible for ripening the grapes…

I was fiddling with exposure settings in preparation for next month’s eclipse when I had an unexpected visitor.

Re: Oh my Devil, the catastrophic St Émilion tasting

Bummer, Nic, but thanks for the report. I haven’t had the 2005 Belair but it sounds like a number of other overdone 2005 St Ems, Bellevue Mondotte being the poster child of RP100s that jumped the shark. JC, I actually enjoyed the 2005 Larcis Ducasse. Though it was very ripe, lush, and modern, it was...

Nice ramblings Jim. I agree with you on 2016. I hope you are right on 2019 as I have a fair number but have tasted only a few on release. Very appealing but I have trouble predicting the future on such young wines. By the way, sending you one of these as you’ve apparently lost yours. IMG_0465....

You can get recent auction hammer prices on CellarTracker (I don’t think they include buyer’s premium) and compare to Wine Searcher retail prices.

Re: 2005 Bordeaux revisited.

I’ve had plenty of bottles show better on day 2. The 2005 Angelus was poor on opening, fair a couple of hours later, and excellent the following day. I don’t think that a young wine oxidizes that fast. Not much oxygen gets into it just sitting there in the bottle. Nor do I think that improvement on ...

2005 Angelus : I approached my first bottle of this with some trepidation after a few other 2005 St. Emilions disappointed due to heavy over-extraction and overripe fruit. Same reaction here. They describe well what I am getting out of the 2014s. I found their comparison to 2002 interesting. Jim was a big fan of 2002. Re: Bordeaux 2020 Southwold Tasting at FarrVintners

I recall a similar “10-years on” sentiment with 2002. Happy to have 2014 represented in my cellar. I think the most interesting statement regarding Farr's conclusion is that tasters felt that the wines would fare better when tasted alone. Large tastings are great, but true wine appreciation begins ...

I agree with your characterizations Jim and put my money on 2016 and 2019, having bought more of those two vintages than any in the past decade. I just hope I’m around long enough to see them blossom. That’s a comment about my age and preference to drink Bordeaux at 20-30+ years, not about the wines...

Re: Poll: Was Robert Parker a net positive or a net negative for Bordeaux?

Jim revised the question to whether we would have ended up where we are now without Parker, and whether we would still have wines like the Gruauds and Talbots of the 80s. I agree with SFEd that we likely would have ended up in a similar place with or without Parker. He certainly catalyzed the proces...

Net positive and not close for me, though there were definitely negative aspects to his influence. Parker did impact winemaking. For the better early on, and then negatively from the mid-'90s forward. Fortunately, the good changes (cleaner cellars, less rot, less Brett, etc.) are sticking while the ...

GBF, I hope you are correct about 2005 Angelus. That’s one I’m holding but have yet to try. I should crack one. I went long (for me) on 2005s and have about half of them left. It was the last year I bought based heavily on Parker reviews. I was a slow learner. Early hype gave way to concerns for excessive extraction. I drank a lot of the lesser ones and a few of the bigger names at 10-15 years. The overextrac...

Spitting helps for larger events. Less useful for a single bottle at home but if Danielle is drinking and the bottle can be stretched 3 days?

I think it’s been a while since NV Pol Roger has been $25. Not counting crazy NH discounts, that is. We served it at our wedding 36 years ago and IIRC it was in the upper $20s back then. Then again, $25 in 1988 would be $64 today.
