The first stop was Silver Springs Winery - it is one of the first wineries you will encounter when you drive up the 414 on the east side of Seneca out of Watkins Glen. One of those booze cruise limos pulled up simultaneously, already full of boxes, and as we watched them spill out on to the parking ...

Re: Exemplary 06 left-bank claret is...

I drankthe 2005 and compared it to de Fieuzal 2005; the Moulin was $25.99, the DeF $24.99, both discounted from their normal price of $30-32 The Moulin was tight at first but opened up very nicely after an hour or so in the decanter; it is a medium-bodied austere style, especially in the context of ...

Thanks very much Richard for the tip...are you willing to divulge the name of the Oxfordshire merchant? Fwiw, Parker gave the 2005 a lukewarm review, rating it the "finest vintage (of this wine) since 1982" and 88-90 points. That will keep it comfortably off the radar of people like Pomero...

It was a fine feast...bordeaux wine enthusiasts, friends and family of several generations... I bought Haut-Bailly and Batailley on release, and have my eye on some Gloria, for around $25 a bottle I notice some wines have high scores - e.g Ducru, which our favorite critic compares to the 1996 and 1986 - if they are really that good they are surely worth a look...or is it because these wines ...

Thinking of the gathering in Manhattan I could not attend, we opened a few wines here in London over the weekend: De Montille Puligny Montrachet Cailleret 2004 - classy wine drinking well, but would not want to risk ageing this Petite L'Eglise, 1999 - a scrumptious fully mature wine, with all the te...

Danny I have had some mixed experiences too...my Talentis went all weird on me...but the Caparzo I tried a couple of weeks ago was sensational, and still quite young...it contained all the best hallmarks of brunello...esp. dense cherry stone sangiovese fruit...that one I could recommend unreservedly.

Re: Advice needed from Tom and other Italian wine lovers

Stuart I think the crash of 08 exposed some Italian wines as being a bit over-priced and over-hyped. Guado (60% can, 30% merlot + syrah) is a modern-style wine, which I used to like but have gone off it. I wouldn't buy it now. Here is my 2c (I only know Tuscany and Piedmonte) Tuscany There are a lot...
