Happy birthday Ed, welcome to your seventh decade on planet earth. Nice way to celebrate. Do you have many 64s left? It was a great vintage in the right bank.

Yesterday at La Trompette in West London 2006 Billecart-Salmon Cuvee Nicolas Francois Classy mature fizz with lovely bracing tension, which matched the intensity of the May sunbeams, with yellow and green citrus notes and stony minerality, a perfect foil for what was to follow…93 Flight one: 2017 ‘y...

I picked up a six pack of the 2015 today at auction: £380 hammer price for a sixpack. That is a lot of good wine for the money.

Re: 2019 Château Bélair Monange
Thanks Nic for the note. I own the 2010, 2014, 2017 and 2018 of this wine and some 2016 Annonce, the second wine. I think these wines are misunderstood and a lot of Brits write them off as modern Parkerised spoofy wines, but as your perspicacious notes demonstrate, this is not an accurate depiction....

That’s you opinion Jim. “The real crime was the lack of security at the Capitol” Are you serious? As far as I know opinion polls suggest that if Trump is convicted that will erode his vote among moderate Republicans, and will hurt him. So that if Biden can still stand up and still speak come Novembe...

I am in a little village near Troyes in France called Messon en route to Chambery where I am staying with Antoine. None of the local restaurants are open so I had to venture to Carrefour in Troyes to buy a baguette and some nice cheese and jambon Serrano….and this…absolutely top drawer and 13.5%. IM...

Alex R and I have articulated the view that it would be a disaster for humankind and Planet Earth if Trump wins. Re: Next Spring: 25th anniversary celebrations in France and Washington DC.
It would be good to replicate France 2025. We could use the original line up as a reference as most estates said we should come back when the coast was clear. It would also be fun to do a dinner containing most/all of the BWE wotys. Whether that be in Trump DC or in France.

Re: ‘Best of the best’ first growths dinner
We did another ‘overflow’ dinner on Tuesday because the person who was going to bring 1985 Cheval Blanc had to drop out of the first dinner. But instead he brought a magnum of 1988 Lafite to this dinner and the two other participants at this smaller dinner bought the 1985 and 1990 Cheval Blancs. My ...

Re: ‘Best of the best’ first growths dinner
Thanks for your comments Mark. The fine wine market here in the UK is very soft too. In fact Bordeaux is going through another crisis. Simply put there is far too much overpriced wine - especially from the 2021 and 2022 vintages sitting around for the market to clear. The 2023 EP season is coming up...

Last night at La Trompette in Chiswick west London, where some BWERes have been, and the culmination of seven of ‘first growth’ dinners in London starting with Lafite in the spring of 2018 and finishing with Cheval Blanc in the autumn of 2023. The idea of this dinner was, if possible, to have a line...

I can get the 2019 for £18 for a half bottle all in from Hedonism wines in Mayfair in London. It gets very well reviewed too. This is a very good price especially considering that Hedonism is owned by a Russian oligarch, answerable to Putin, who owns the GOP now - lock, stock and barrel.

For me the answer is clear - he has been a been a net negative - for e...

Re: 2020 Troplong Mondot
In the UK Troplong Mondot is significantly cheaper than Beausejour D-L, and in recent tastings I have attended the BDL just didn’t stand out from the pack the way Troplong did. Hence my vfm prospectus. But it is always healthy to disagree.

I have the 2018, 2019, 2020, and they have fabulous potential.
These wines perhaps represent the best vfm in St-Emilion because the terroir is superb. And now the oak/gloss/extraction has been dialled down to sensible levels the terroir can shine through

Thanks for the notes Claudius, a useful update. I have a lot of money invested in both vintages, and am optimistic too. Wasn’t the 2009 Giscours one of the BWE wines of the year? I think that is a good price Jim especially if it includes taxes. For reference I bought 2x3 at £500 pb ex taxes or £1500 ex tax per three pack, and three packs now are being listed around £2.3-2.5k ex taxes but suspect the lower price is more indicative. So $691 is not much higher than the ex-tax p...

Re: So what have you bought lately?
That was a great bargain for the 1983 Lafite stefan a wine I really rate. The price of Lafite has come off a lot - the range on retail here is very wide and now for the 1996 £720 (equivalent to $900) to £1450, with the lower price being the fresher one, and more indicative of the market. For mine th...
