Re: Lightening in London

Last night we had dinner at Cabotte in London where we had a BWE event in March 2023. The theme of the dinner was mature first growths, and all of them showed well, and demonstrated the virtue of patience. We had three vintages of Haut-Brion: 1966, 1985 and 1990 and two 1989s: Margaux and Mouton. Th...

I thought the 1982 edged it but they were both stellar, like 96 vs 95 point wines. Joel thought the 1985 edged it. It was a bit like the men’s 100m Olympic final and the 1982 came out the blocks faster.

Last night at Noize where we had the BWE party in March 2023. The theme last night was ‘grower champagne and burgundy’ - some terrific wines here with the two 2002 red burgundies neck and neck in my book and both at least 95 pt wines, while the 90 Climens was fabulous and the Meursault Charmes went ...

Re: 2019, 2020 and 2021 tasting - 4 wines

Thanks Mark for your detailed reply Like Nic I also found your comments on DDC interesting as I have generally had good experiences with this wine from the late 70s to the early 00s, where clearly there was a stylistic change towards a more Parker friendly style. I don’t think the estate really retu...

Re: 2014 Chateau Meyney has been uncorked and other ramblings....

2014 Meyney, Calon, Tronquoy and Montrose have all been consumed chez moi and they are excellent. Perhaps an off bottle? RP the wine was not faulty in the technical sense - although the label was tatty because it had been in a damp cellar - it was not corked, oxidised, heat damaged or in any other ...

Re: 2014 Chateau Meyney has been uncorked and other ramblings....

Yes I think Jim the best utility for this wine would be to open it 1-2 days in advance and imbibe it with a large hunk of rare porterhouse steak. Day two, it has softened a bit around the edges; it is less unpleasant. But it is still unpleasant to drink. It still suffers from the same shortcomings: ...

Re: 2019, 2020 and 2021 tasting - 4 wines

Interesting notes thanks Mark for posting them. I always found it difficult to evaluate Bordeaux at this kind of age, when the wines tend to have a fair bit of puppy fat. Did you get the impression that Pape Clement has dialled things down a bit? Because 20 years ago, in Parker’s hey day, they were ...

I sourced a bottle of this wine this week. I was fascinated to try it because I had read polarised reviews. I opened it tonight after standing it up for a day, then double decanted it. Initial impressions are not favourable. It is horribly over extracted. It has bitter acerbic tannins and a drying f...

Re: 2014 Chateau Meyney has been uncorked and other ramblings....

It’s a pretty rich and dense wine for sure, but I didn’t find it offensively so. It’s a steak wine, something you would uncork at a testosterone filled Wall Street steakhouse. I like the 2019 and 2020 Meyneys as well but I think I give the nod to the 2014. These are very richly colored wines. This ...

Re: 2014 Chateau Meyney has been uncorked and other ramblings....

I would be really curious to try one of these, and also the 2016. While these new fangled Meyneys are generally well reviewed, a significant minority have grumbled that the estate has gone over to the dark side with an inclination to soup up the wines, with the controversial owner of Ch Angélus, Hub...

Thanks JC that is helpful. I might have to move this case up the pecking order.

However I have unopened cases of 2012, 2011, 2010, 2008 and 2006, and an opened case of 2005 - not ready in my opinion - as well as cases of younger vintages than 2014.

Has anyone tried the 06, 08 or 12 recently?
