TN: 1998 Clerc Milon

1998 Château Clerc Milon - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (1/1/2016) When will this wine really come around? Seventeen years on it is still tight and unyielding, showing much more tannin than fruit. It does still have quite a lot of depth/density, but the lack of development over 17 years is a r...

Re: A note on the 2003 Pontet Canet we had with Alfred Tesseron.

As long as they are picking clean fruit, biodynamics should not have any negative effects. How much positive it really has is unknown. What is true about biodynamics is that producers who use it are very mindful and attentive, which goes a long way to getting good fruit. Wet years are an issue becau...

As with any movement there are good and bad examples. One instance of a headache is not data about biodynamics. Sooty you are hurting, but there is only an anecdotal link. As for hardly typical, let's add Nikolaihof, Leroy, Dujac (organic), Lafarge, Lapierre, ZH, Weinbach, Pontet Canet, Wittmann, et...

Several years in the cellar have worked magic on this wine. I have never seen quite this level of transformation. It's still quite ripe, with a bit of a roasted edge, but it now has shed enough fat to expose a structure and allow a subtle earthiness and minerality to enter the picture.

1999 Château Moulin Saint-Georges - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (2/27/2014)
A lovely, balanced, classic weight Bordeaux that delivered fruit, spice, cedar and a gentle tannic spine. This is in a lovely place right now, but with no fear for the future.

TN: 2000 La Dame de Montrose

I thought this would be fairly evolved, but it is actually quite young, tight and in need of further cellar time. Sadly it was my last bottle, so I won't find out what it is like when it matures. at least it sacrificed itself in the protection of the Grand Vin.

Curious as to why you listed those Jim. Very nice. I did not get an offer for the Badstube Kabinett. Too bad, as Badstube is a personal favorite. Ended up with Himmelreich Kabinett which is not so tough to take.

Generally I do not start drinking Prum Auslese until age 15 or so. Never had one that was too old.

2001 Clerc Milon

I thought I had the '98 standing up. Turns out it was the 2001. Ah well, no problem. Early going it is still showing a good bit of oak, though it is starting to turn cedary. Dark fruit is still prominent as well. Will be following it over the next couple of hours.

Prum has been uniformly outstanding as far back as I can recall. 2000 and 2006 were maybe not up to snuff, but other than that it is all stylistic preferences based on the vintage.

As far as Grosses Gewachs, Prum make virtually zero dry wine.

Ok, 2001 Kabinett is pretty much ready to go. For those who like only moerate maturity so is the stable of 2001 Spatlesen. Leave the Auslesen alone for 3-5 more years. 2012 is a very good ripeness AND good acidity vintage. Based on a couple of handfuls of wines from bottle (Prum, Selbach, Schaefer, ...

The only 2012 Prum I have had so far is the Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett, but it is fantastic. 2012 is a good ripeness AND good acidity vintage, so I would buy, buy, buy. I did. (though my pricing was $3-$5 lower, but that was pre-arrival)

K'Plah! ( that is a little bit of Klingon for DavidG)

Only '09s I have had are La Prade and Hourtin Ducasse. Both were very enjoyable wines. I did not buy a single bottle of classed growth in 2009. 2005 is where they lost me.
