Happy Birthday, Ed!
1964 Haut-Brion was the first First Growth that Lucie and I drank, way back in 1970. At $10, it was far and away the most expensive wine purchase we had made up to that time.

6 1970 Nameless Wine (375)
3 1962 Nameless Wine
2 1961 Nameless Wine
Three wines we liked in the 1970s. The 1962 was the wine that got us started on drinking fine Bordeaux. I know I am throwing away money on swill, but Lucie insisted, for old times sake.

1988 Lafite is indeed wonderful, but the last time I drank it, around six years ago IIRC, my bottle was completely out shown by some of Francois' trophies and Tim's 1969 La Tache (which Tim bought & brought because he knew it was on my bucket list).

Re: ‘Best of the best’ first growths dinner
"Best of the best" is the right title! While it was unfortunate that some were not in good shape, having an excellent bottle of 1989 Haut-Brion is enough to make any event a huge success. However, with a current price of $2000 with no guarantee that the bottle will be good, it is now an ea...

Yeah, 1986 Gruaud has been really good since the mid 1990s. Different now, of course, but still excellent. I think it was about $150 the last time I bought it (pre-pandemic). The lowest price I see now is $200 and it pushes close to $300 at some famous stores.

Along with all this New Love for La Lagune, one should emphasize that older vintages purchased at auction are likely to be swill. La Lagune $$$ should only be spent on recent vintages.

40+ years ago I stored a few cases of wine for a couple of years in my brother's underground cellar. At some point he discovered that wine loving rats lived there. They had chewed off capsules on many bottles and begun to chew through corks. Fortunately, they were exterminated before they got comple...

For me, too. No other first growth has it. It reminds me of Salieri versus Mozart: Salieri crafts a perfect composition, then a Mozart piece blows it away.

The food part of the menu looks great; glad it was great. I did not know that Lambray made a Folatieres. Did the Som decant it? $691 tax free is a very good price for 2016 Lafite, Jim. I doubt that you could get that price at auction.

About the same, Jim, as the 1996, and hard to get at auctions for under $900 all in. Probably considerably less in the UK at auctions; right, Ian? Occasionally at USA auctions you can get "bargains" on Lafite. My most recent purchase was the equivalent of $410/ bottle all in for the 1983 L...

I drink a lot of La Tour Blanche, partly because I like and partly because it is the favorite Sauternes of a friend. I appreciate the 2003, but I am not surprised that it did not go well with foie gras. IMO, it is a wine to drink by itself or with a salty cheese or salted popcorn.

The 2010 il Poggione is still primary, but the Bolognese sauce smooths it out. I saved some to drink tomorrow at lunch.

I wrote the above before starting to eat. Pairing the 2014 Cantemerle with a ground venison dish Lucie prepared was a good choice as the venison smoothed out the rough edges in the Cantemerle.
