Re: 2023 BWE WOTY

Since I have not tasted even one 2020 Bordeaux yet, I can’t be of any help in choosing a wine of the year from that vintage. In general, think I would prefer to have the wine of the year be from a relatively recent vintage that many have been able to taste and is still generally available in the mar...

I think it was the was 1986 Montebello and 1991 Montelena - they were both very good as was the 1991 Dominus.

Re: The 2023 BWE DC Convention is under way!

I thought the 2003 Latour was very, very good and an easy winner in the 2003 horizontal. The 2003 Cos was by far the worst wine in the 2003 - surprised me since I had really liked it the couple times I’ve had it in the past. Of the more mature wines my favorites were 1985 La Mission Haut Brion, 1982...

I had COVID in January 2023 even though I had the maximum number of Pfizer vaccine shots. Luckily I was able to start PAXLOVID less than an hour after symptoms began. The COVID was gone in less than 24 hours. I had no loss of taste or smell. However the taste of the PAXLOVID lingered in my mouth for...

I don’t think you will be disappointed by that 2007 Taittinger Comtes Rose. It’s wonderful - a bit more intense Pinot Noir flavor and different from the more elegant 2007 Dom Ruinart Rose. For me, I love them both and think I have 2 or 3 bottles left of each.

Great idea, that 2007 Taittinger Comtes Rose is a very nice Champagne - best to get 2 (or more).

My ranking of the red Bordeaux: 1. 1996 Latour 2. 1985 Leoville Las Cases 3. 1996 Mouton R 4. 1989 Pichon Lalande 5. 1998 Lafite R 6. 1996 Cos d’Estournel 7. 1982 Cos d’Estournel 8. 1994 Pichon Lalande Amazing to think a wine as great as 1982 Cos would come in 7th place out of 8. In general I agree with previous mentions of Italian Pinot Grigio from Alto Adige ($12-$18), Spanish Albariño ($16-$25) and La Pepiere Muscadet ($16-$25) from France. For Sparkling, I would add Adami Prosecco ($18-$25) and Ruffino Prosecco ($13-$18) from Italy and Saint-Hilaire Blanquette de Limoux ...

Re: The BWE Spring 2023 Great Wine Buying Freeze Contest (a la Seinfeld): who can hold out the longest?

Last week, all Bordeaux were 20% off at Calvert Woodley in DC. I didn’t buy anything. So far since the Buying Freeze began, I’ve purchased 4 bottles of exempted Champagne (which is less than the amount of Champagne consumed during this period). I do anticipate that I will be buying some white Burgun...

Except for one bad bottle, all of the 1970 Latours that I’ve had have been outstanding. The 1959, 1962, 1966 and 1967 Latours have all been great, too. The one time I had the 1989 was just okay and not nearly as good as Lynch Bages, Palmer, Montrose, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande or Cos d’Estournel. ...

Re: Which producer was your gateway into the perils of red burgundy?

Like others, I started out with mostly white Burgundy. There was a big sale of older wines from a distributor that was going bankrupt (I think) at Calvert Woodley back around 1994. I picked up a bunch of 1971 Boillot red Burgundies for about $13 a bottle. They were very good. I do like red Burgundy ...

On Friday night, I plan to bring a white Burgundy, a California cab or cab-blend and something else that most of you have never had.

On Saturday night, I plan to bring Bordeaux from 1982 and 1979 (in honor of Tom and Gail’s recent anniversary).

Probably bring Champagne both night.
