Didn't the 47 Cheval Blanc have something like 14% alcohol? Haven'y heard many complaints about it.

Re: Gilman ranks the 00s

But wasn't the consensus on 2010 it was classic squared? Solidly ripe but also solidly tannic. Sounded like my kind of vintage but unfortunately not my kind of pricing. I'll be watching though in a year - wherever I am - to see what happens as the wines hit the shore.

Re: TN: bordeaux notes

Thanks. I've had one 96 Potensac from a case that was great, probably what you're describing. Maybe one or two were nice/OK, and a handful have been rather dry and lame. There seems to be a lot of bottle variation with that vintage.

Can't agree Jim. The problem is not Obama, but guys like you with a man crush on Jack and Bobby. They're dead, Jim. They weren't all that either. Clinton can chalk up 100% of his popularity to a single appearance on Leno (or was it the other guy) and Greenspan's free hookers and blow policies. Then ...

Yes, Virginia, there are good $15 Bdx

You might have to wait for a sale to get them though. Like the 2003 La Tour de Mons, the 2006 also came through. This wine does need more time than the latter (or at least it deserves the additional three years). It improved through 2 freeze-thaw cycles over 10 days. It's lighter-mid weight, and the...

I must inject a note of caution here that this is not a done deal. Things proceeded in a binary off-on manner for a few days until this afternoon when mention of red tape popped up. So it's gone from "consider it done" to wait until mid-May. I appreciate the offers of support. I will have ...

04 Sociando Mallet and 02 Matrot Meursault Chevalieres

Duly filing my reports. The Sociando Mallet was a bit sleepy as you might expect. Sadly (for me) I must report a complete absence of green peppers. Other than that, based on this tasting, I would be ready to declare yet another vintage of the century, for despite a somewhat closed-down performance, ...

That price struck me as some proof that maybe Bdx pricing has not increased that much in the past 18 years, beyond the 1sts and maybe a few other wines. Re: TN: The 2003 Ch. La Tour de Mons has been uncorked!

This is another 03 that's drinking well already. Of course it's only a crus bourgeois (superieur) so 8-9 years or so this should not surprise. I think it's also a factor of the vintage - soft fruit that makes it approachable. This was by no means flabby, and it actually had nice acidity, I thought. ...

Re: Can anyone tell me about mead wine?

Mead is fermented honey and water. It can be still or sparkling. It can be dry or sweet (or off-dry). It can be barrel fermented/aged or not. My winemaker friend in Salida is making some now and it's fairly popular. It's fun for a glass every now and then.

Amen. But for the modern school of critics "complexity" in the context of a 2-oz pour and 30-second evaluation window of a wine that's been 4 months in barrel boils down to checking 3 boxes: 1) sweetness 2) oak 3) alcohol. Whichever wine shows the most of these wins the Miss Complexity com...

If you define complexity as noticeable alcoholic heat and hard, obvious oak, I agree, the 04 Magdelaine is deficient in that regard. I could not in any sense agree the wine was lacking in concentration. I thought it was dense, albeit in a tender, supple way. PC of course often has the lowest prices,...

Plenty of oak spicing up the nose. Plenty of oak trussing, certainly enough to harness the fruit. But for now this adds up to a kiln-dried as opposed to silky impression. As Berry Brothers say, "for laying down."

2009 La Tour du Pin. Not unlike the 2008 Gazin, in that it was a bit hot and hard. Not as much wood seemingly. And it also seemed a touch lighter-bodied. Hard to tell at this point because it does have a fast and hard attack in the mouth which can tend to mask whatever happens afterward. On the plus...
