Re: Favorite non-Burgundy white wine region or grape
I like white wine more and more, eclipsing red wine for many stretches especially in summer. But I need more options. You’ll be fine as long as you avoid Gewurtztraminer  . This might make an interesting new thread — what varietals do you dislike/not get/generally avoid/consider a viniferous ...

2017 Carbonnieux Blanc
This is so good. Crisp, savory, a touch herbal, shares a lot with Sancerre. For $30-35, a world class white QPR.

Blanquito, Not surprised, recent examples (within the last few years) of 1975 Pichon Lalande and 1978 Domaine de Chevalier have been very good. Good bottles of 1982 Talbot can be spectacular. Chris Bublitz Indeed, Chris. I’ve long been a big fan of the 78 DDC and this bottle of it was going strong....

I drink so little Pouilly Fume, but I do cellar and love a good amount of Sancerre (but prices have gone a little bonkers, like in so much of the wine world).

I would hasten to add that, while opening each of these brilliant bottles, I ran through my trig tables, pondered the brilliance of Archimedes and Pythagorus, and wrote out pi to the 100th decimal place in homage to BWE’s most eminent professor of mathematics.

Re: Best vintages of Bordeaux dinner
One of the best deals I ever got, which I’ve posted about before, was a case of the 92 Talbot on close out in 1995 for like $8-9 bottles. And I swear that after 5 years in the cellar, this wine blossomed marvelously showing surprising depth, wonderful nuance, and superb aromatics. It was cracking up...

Definitely save half of the bottle to try over 2 or 3 days, Jimmy. I’ve enjoyed young Thivin on day 1, but the real fireworks have usually come on the second day.

Had a really great bottle of the 2000 Bel Air Marquis d’Aligre yesterday. Seemingly fully mature, but should hold at this level for 10-15+ years I guess. Reminded me a lot wines from the 80’s, showing earthy/forest floory but with nice balance. Maybe like a more refined Sociando or a La Lagune or C...

Re: Best vintages of Bordeaux dinner
Dude (as my 5 year old has started regularly saying), what a tasting! Fantastic. The 85s were such a great bargain for so long compared to the 82, 89 and 90s, but around 10 years ago or so the prices really shot up and pretty much pulled even in cost. I got a few before the surge —eg, cases of the w...

My wine epiphany was several bottles of 78 Lascombes my dad opened at Thanksgivings when I was around 20 years old. Not sure what I’d think of those bottles now, but at the time they were mesmerizingly complex and silky, replete with seductive Margauxberries.

Re: What's the first "wine" you ever drank?
The first wine that entered the consciousness for me and my high school buddies was J. Roget “American Champagne”. We didn’t like beer or hooch yet, but off-dry bubbly was an easy gateway beverage. Plus, it was super cheap but the fizz made it seem fancy, and the girls liked it too. It was basically...
