Re: So what have you bought lately?

I would add that I only grabbed those 75 Haut Bailly because of their amazing fills, attractive price $82, how much I like the ‘79 H-B, and Mark Golodetz’s favorable note on the wine (which was virtually the only thing written on this particular vintage since parker panned it in the 70’s). Thanks Ma...

Re: What are your top ten favorite estates?

The one I really struggled with was Beychevelle, so good in 1986 and earlier (loved the 59), but it was nondescript in the 90’s including 1990. I think the 2000-2005 stretch was a return to form, but for my palate, the jury is out on the style shifts 2009-present. I own both the 09 and 10, so I’ll g...

Re: What are your top ten favorite estates?

It’s really hard to pick a consistent favorite over the last 50+ years, as so many of my favorite chateau either stank in the 80’s or stink now. The contrast is quite stark in my mind. Take Meyney— for a long time I drank more Meyney from the 80’s than virtually anything else, but they utterly lost ...

Re: What are your top ten favorite estates?

I only have one chateau that makes my top list over the last 30+ years: Magdelaine.

That said, I could easily add VCC, PLL, and Figeac. An argument could be made for Sociando as well, though it hard to find well-stored bottles of their 80’s vintages.

I'll never forget one of the BWE conventions, I don't remember which city we were in, but it was the convention either just before or just after I selected the 2005 Burgundy vintage as the BWE (protest) wine of the year. Seeing Stu’s categories, where presumably the occasional archeological dig is needed to secure some of his ancient bottles, I’d add that 95% of my backfilled bottles have been from 1982-2000, with the oldest bottle ever probably from 1970.* *Not including some utterly pristine Italian wines from the...

Re: 80's Bordeaux and retirement

A few thoughts about LLC... I really enjoyed the 82 LLC, but I expected the heavens to part and they didn't, a relative disappointment reflected in my note... the 82 was still young, with an almost shockingly deep color still, so Ed's thesis that LLC is nearly-always-too-young certainly has some mer...

Cordier 82-86 is one of the the greatest stretches of all-time (well, since I started following BDX)... they still made great tipple in 88-90, but the fell off the pace quite a bit in my experience, especially Gruaud where the 88, 89 and 90 cannot hold a candle to the 82, 83, 85, and 86.

Sounds great Ian. With the corkage calculated per bottle, rather than a fixed fee per person as we’ve often had at past conventions, we might even end up with a more reasonable number of bottles, maybe just a little more than a bottle per person (vs 3 or even 4 at most events).

Good point, Ian. Excluding Firsts, who did better than Lynch 82-90? If the range is 80-89, I’d probably pick PLL, but 82-90 would probably be Lynch.

I rarely buy wines over 25 years old, more like 15-25 year range, but I’d have to say the great majority have turned out very well.
