Re: (Extra) stupid question: what would you pay for a 22 year-old Bordeaux?

Ok, enough vagueness. Not including sales tax, I have an option for the 2000 du Tertre for $70.20 each. Buy? Let's put it this way-- I'd buy a lot of it if it cost $50... $70 is perfectly priced to induce ambivalence. Here's my most recent note on the wine, from April 2022 : Sexy, exotic bouquet, li...

Re: (Extra) stupid question: what would you pay for a 22 year-old Bordeaux?

I think that you should buy more of that BWE WOTY, the 2000 Château du Tertre. You always liked it, and probably a great Margaux for 10 more years. Winner, winner! I've been here long enough to know half well my BWE siblings. Looking forward to have a great time in March, in your company Patrick. I...

What is your definition of "cheap enough to enjoy on a weeknight"? Under $150? Since I’m ambivalent about buying this wine based on the price, I guess I’m looking to first find out everyone else’s weeknight “buy threshold”, combined with the other info provided. Of course, one man’s weekn...

(Extra) stupid question: what would you pay for bottle of the 2000 du Tertre?

Consider this the poor man’s follow up to the 89 Lynch Bages Price Index: what would you pay for a 22 year-old 1855-classified Bordeaux from the vaunted 2000 vintage? A few additional bits of pertinent info: you like this wine, a lot (it’s in the 91-93 pts range); it’s mature but only mid-plateau (p...

After enjoying the 2019 Thivin Zaccharie (which is a blend of their top terriors) so much, I decided to get some more Thivin and opted for 5 bottles of their oldest old vine cuvee (80-100 years old), the single vineyard 2020 Godefroy. I’ve had the 83 Lynch 8-9 times over the last decade plus and it has always been terrific 93-pt range. I’ve bought and rebought it numerous times (I still have a bunch in the cellar) as the market has never seemed to realize or price-in how good the 83s are (true of the vintage in general outside of...

I read somewhere, probably from the man himself, that Parker made a fuss about the 78 vintage as the best in a good while. But that was when he was still a nobody. The wines turned out well, but I’m not sure it’s better than 79, and I generally prefer 70>78. 71 made a number of sleepers too, but the...

Re: Which producer was your gateway into the perils of red burgundy?

DRC, based on the few times I’ve had it, is transcendent. But it’s hard for me to consider it “burgundy”. That’s like calling Michael Jordan a “basketball player”. Whatever DRC can do doesn’t seem relevant to the burgundies I might buy, cellar, enjoy, cherish. Not a criticism by any means, just sepa...

Which producer was your gateway into the perils of red burgundy?

It took me a while, but I’m digging red burgundy these days. One producer in particular really served as the gateway drug: Chevillon (honorable mention to Felettig and Jadot). Love these wines — the reasonable pricing played an important role.

What’s yours?

Along with the 82 and 85, this has long been one of my favorite vintages of an otherwise overrated, washed out, shadow-of-its-former-self chateau, La Lagune. Good points, Marcus. My last PLL was the 2003, notably good for the vintage— though I did get a minuscule pour of the 16 at the UGC. I am a big fan of the 2000-2003 PLLs though.

But by all accounts, PLL probably did lose the thread thereafter when May-Elaine de Lencquesaing sold the estate in 2003.
