Re: What’s your 89 Lynch Bages?

Like Joel, I don’t have a single bottle I would identify as my North Star in that way. Which doesn’t surprise me - I love to read but couldn’t identify a single favorite book, love movies but couldn’t narrow my favorite list smaller than maybe three to five, etc. I have fallen in love with many ind...

Taste it 3 times, always great. Even next to the 1986, i preferred the 1982.
Never had this wine. Had the transcendent 86 Mouton once, but never the 82. Maybe the 82 should be my don’t-look-up bottle?? (I’m cheating again).

Re: Mmmm, Jacques, I'm loving this 2019 Domaine Pavelot Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Gravains....

I guess another way to say it is, I’ve gone some (mercifully short lived) phases where what stood out to me were a wine’s flaws rather than its features. A good wine had fewer flaws than an ok wine. There was a somm in our wine group for a little while who always approached wine that way, I was very...

I found the William Kelley reference Marcus made and I quote more of it here: “After 2000, Montrose has been fermented in stainless steel rather than wood, and concerted efforts seem to have been made in the cellar to tame the estate’s animal side: the 2005 is as great as the 2000, but noticeably mo...

Jim started this in another thread, but I think it deserves its own place, so… What is your perfect wine? I’ve gone through phases where wine appreciation starts to feel more like wine negativity , where that dazzling sweet spot wine can attain grows narrower and narrower. It’s not a good mindset to end up in, even if it originates from the noblest passion, the urge, no, the need to understand, to analy...

Thoughts on the 2000 Montrose? Anyone had it?

I see some 2000 Montrose for a competitive price, especially given what they’re asking for the 2018-2021, but it’s still priced like a wine that should fantastic (or will be one day).

Champagne prices have gone from bad to worse it seems. To take one example, the 2012 Dom Perignon is *only* $259 at K&L, the same outfit where I got the 2008 Dom for $136. I did pick up some 2012 Cristal for $230 at Costco though.

Agree, Stefan, I’ve had a lot of very good and excellent 1983s. No way it’s an off vintage. Perhaps overshadowed by 1982, like 1981 and 1988 in that regard, but not off. Totally, I think every 83 Bordeaux I’ve had at least qualified as a success if not much better (except for a certain third growth...

I’ve mentioned this one before but it’s been a while: the best “off vintage” claret I’ve had, by far, was the terrific 1992 Talbot. It was being dumped in the mid-90’s for like $8 a pop, so my dad grabbed 3 cases and walked around with a big grin repeating “it’s Grand Cru!”. We drank reams of the st...
