Goodbye, BWE. Live long and prosper.

Goodbye, BWE. This is my final post. Rather than just disappear, I wanted to say goodbye. Despite it all, I have loved it here these last 20 years (I joined in the summer of 2003 on the old msn site) and learned so much and made so many friends. You’re all welcome in Denver any time, drop me a line ...

Re: A historic royal BWE visit to the Great State of Maine

Goodbye, BWE. Despite Jim and his demons, I have loved it here these last 20 years* and learned so much and made so many friends. But the petty, mean spiritedness at the top has at long last done it in for me. So, I’ll join Dale, Ramon, Matt, Salil, Chris, OrlandoBobby and others who gave up and wer...

Re: A historic royal BWE visit to the Great State of Maine

Delusions spring eternal. Chris Bublitz, your beloved Winona, was in on the “secret” and attended the Saturday tasting that the whole country (which of course doesn’t include Canada) was in on except you. You know, for a “lawyer”, you sure don’t read things carefully — it has already been mentioned ...

“Secret” dinner? Seriously? How old are we? Do we owe you something Jim? Are we all supposed to clear everything with you in advance? You sure have delusions of grandeur to go along with your rank hypocrisy. Ironically given this latest outburst, if you weren’t such a jerk periodically (phase of the...

Re: So what have you bought lately?

Hey, according to my spreadsheet tally, if I stopped buy wine today and drink (and sell) on average as much wine as I have over the last decade, I have only 8 years of wine left! That’s a five alarm fire! In 8 years, I’ll still be in my 50’s and devilishly handsome, which compared to our most recent...

Checking, I found this note on the 2020 MSG from Galloni (along side the compulsory 95+ pts from Suckling and Dunnuck): The 2020 Moulin Saint-Georges is soft, fruity and easygoing, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. The blend is 85% Merlot and 15%...

This property recently flashed across my radar for the first time, as another ‘trusted palate’ was singing the virtues of the 2000 Moulin St George as an excellent and traditional St Emilion. JC and others, has the style changed much since 2000 or can this still be counted on to share commonalities ...

Great to hear, as I’m sitting on 14 of these. But I consider you (and Dale) the Magdelaine Muse, so your cues are well noted. That said, I plan to wait until these are at least 20 years old before dipping in a toe, as I seem to most prefer Magdelaine with 25 or 30 years on it.

For my two cents, this was a very, very worthy choice, irrespective of any subsequent bottle variation. Not only classic and so good, but affordable enough that a grad student (like I was at the time I joined BWE) could afford to chase a few (I bought a few at the time from the once venerable Sherry...

Drinking the thawed dregs of the bottle tonight and this is really killer. Better on the nose, reminding me of the way terrific wines from the 80’s smell, indeed is bouquet is fully mature in all ways. Really, really good, 93 is conservative for this bottle.

Lynch crushed Baron from 1970-1988, was equal to Baron in 89-90, was better again from 91-99 (though neither was especially good in that era), and in the few vintages I’ve tried was effectively equal to Baron 00-05 (I’d give a small edge to Baron in these years). *One could readily make a similar ca...

1985 Rausan Segla was my Margaux bargain of the vintage. I got a case from Sokolin in NYC for $185. Long gone, every bottle was delish. I still have an 89 and a few 00 left from Rauzan Segla. So much bottle variation in the 1996 Sociando. I have had bad, mediocre, ok and good bottles all from the same case. Yeah, I certainly got a good one yesterday. Bottle variation is definitely a major variable at S-M, though I’ve had far more issues with vintages from the 80’s than more recent ones....

1996 Sociando Mallet I understand this wine has received some plaudits around here, so I was eager to try a bottle this evening (a sultry night in Denver, a new-normal, fossil-fuels-induced, GOP-enabled hellscape that feels like the bayou in July).
