Very interesting. So the only people there on Saturday will be private parties? Perhaps we will find some other interesting private parties!

I am thinking a 2001 Brunello and 2004 Barbaresco for Friday. For Saturday, I'm planning on 1995 GPL and 1996 Pontet Canet.

Re: 2000 vs. 2001 Bordeaux
I saw that Vinous review, but did not look closely. Personally I bought zero bottles of 2001 because I spent all my "allowance" on 2000 futures. I know many here have spoken positively about 2001's so I will be interested in any comments from those who have experience with both vintages.

I'm thinking of 95/96 Bordeauxs for Saturday. And considering a 1999 Burgundy (2) for Friday. If Burgs don't work for Friday, I can work on an alternative.

Re: BWE DC 2021 - Themes?
If it is one of the OK bottles of 86 Ducru, it should be lovely. But many were flawed back then because of problems with bret (I think) in the winery. I bought 4 bottles and at least two were flawed. One of the bad ones was a bottle I brought to the 2016 BWE gathering in DC.

BTW, Jacques, I agree with your side rant about Burghound. I think he underscores village wines routinely. The trick is to figure out which ones.

The island sounds very interesting as does the restaurant where you had dinner. We occasionally find ourselves in similar circumstances with non-wine-geek friends, but we manage to enjoy ourselves in spite of that.

I can't give a comprehensive answer, but can share my own personal experience. I frequented a small sole proprietor wine shop in Chicago for maybe 15 years before moving. The owner was very knowledgeable (was "the wine guy" at the old Sam's in Chicago (after his father was "the wine g...

Interesting comparison, Arv. Our house budget bubbly is the NV Roederer Estate, and has been for probably 20+ years. They just consistently make a nice product at an attractive price (especially when shops put it on sale).

Opened a 2000 Talbot to go with a grilled rack of lamb. Both were delicious. I decanted the bottle about 3 hours before dinner, and I think it actually could have benefitted from a longer decant. I've been impressed with how the Talbot has shown itself since I first cracked the case last year. I wou...

We opened a 2006 Ridge Geyserville to accompany a marinated, grilled pork tenderloin. It has been a number of years since my last bottle, and this was a very nicely developed and aged Geyserville. The tannins are pretty well resolved, the acidity has receded, and the fruit was really fragrant and fl...

Just saw an offer for 2020 Pontet Canet for $111/bottle compared to $80/bottle for first tranche of 2019. That is a hefty increase, though I think they came out with pricing early last year and others did not lower prices as much as they did.

Five years to get your imported French wine
It looks like the US and EU have declared a five-year truce that will remove the recent import tariffs on wine. From the Washington Post: "Under the terms of the E.U.-U.S. deal on airplane manufacturers, the two sides agreed to put aside differences in their nearly 17-year battle over governmen...

Years ago, maybe 15 or more, I remember Felsina and Fontodi being pretty similiar in price. I stopped buying Fontodi after a run of "off" bottles, and then increasing prices. I had no idea it had gotten to be almost 2 times the price of Felsina.

You might also look at Chablis in 2018. They are not a "classical" profile because they are riper. But I think you can get a decent representation of a regular white Burg with a relatively less costly Chablis.

jckba, have you had these wines in other vintages? The producer is new to me, but Neal Martin's reviews convinced me I would like them. So far I've tasted the Pouilly Fuisse Pastoral and the St. Veran La Fournaise, and both were quite nice now, but will be enjoyable for at least several years.

I just looked at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill for arriving Friday, departing Monday, and I'm getting a member rate of $215. Is there a secret code for the $205 rate?
