Re: El Dorado Wine Passport Weekend

Thanks Glen, there are a lot of little gems up there. I like Charles Mitchell Reserve Syrah and reserve Barbera, and Karley's Mourvedre. The barberas are starting to come into there own now. The problem with foothill wines is they are so rich and high in alcohol. Now exactaly food friendly, but grea...

1996 Ch. Lafon Rochet

Popped and poured this to celebrate the end of our master bath/bedroom remodel. Wonderful nose. A medium bodied wine with medium concentration. Acidity adds a bright note that put this in the older style of wine. No complaints from me. The acid adds that mouthwatering feeling, slightly tart, and jui...

Re: '08 Bordeaux: first of the big guns out, at -70%

Alex, Almerica is in rescession, Europe is in recession, Asia does not buy quantities of Bordeaux. Everyone is suffering and it will probably get a little worse. Down 41% after the huge price increases during the 00s is not a lot for many people. PS, I make no apologies for buying mainly politically...

Well not really a tasting note but a warning. This is not ready for primetime. It is closed without even a glint of pleasure. It is a medium-full bodied wine. Moderate concentration but rustic and with harsh tannins. Like the Gloria, it is very masculine in style. One would swear that it is not rela...

Yes Richard both Gloria and St. Pierre seem to have upped their game. I wonder who runs it now, I have to believe Henri Martin is retired or well you know. Anyway, I thought the 2003 was exceptional and a decent price. I have notice that for the later vintages the price seems to be a little high.

2005 Gloria

This is a well made wine. It is full bodied and deeply concentrated, neither of which I associate with Gloria. It is low in acid and very tannic, but not aggressively so. Easily a 10 year wine. The favor profile is a deep rich pit fruit, with tar and tobacco. A hint of wood frames the fruit. It is d...

NWR. An ugly decision

Nothing good will come from this day. Nasdaq my 9yr golden retriever is ill. I suspect today I will get the news of the problem from the tests. I openly admit that I know nothing about trocken Riesling. The was my first one. It was a good first experience. This was a medium bodied wine with excellent concentration. There was a certain oily texture that is present in rieslings of quality. Well balanced with a backbone of steely acid. The ini...

I had this a few months ago and it was evolving into a legendary Lagrange. When we are much older, I am confident we will say - for all the hyped vintages between 2000 and 2005, the real winner was 2000.

I agree with both Chris and Roberto. The Cantermerle was very accessible when last tasted and the La Fleur de Bouard has begun to integrate over the year. It's drinkable now and will no doubt improve with age.

Thanks for the notes Jim. I think I'll let the big gun rest for a few more years.
