Re: Little wines : A Torres and a Mitolo

Hi Nic, I've had many, many fine wines from the Torres folks, going back to wines from the 60's and 70's, so I'll be on the lookout for their Ribera del Duero "Celeste". I've also never had a Mitolo that made we want to buy another one... You must be pretty good at this tasting stuff, Nic!...

There's a Seinfeld episode where Kramer gets banned from the neighborhood fruit stand that sounds eerily similar. I'd go to bat for you, MichaelP, but I doubt it would help as I've never ordered from them and they'd likely just ban me too. "NO WINE FOR YOU!" Sorry I can't help either, Mic...

Re: TNs: A Burgundy and a Piedmont

The story goes that when Angelo Gaja was tearing out a Nebbiolo vineyard to be replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon, his father said "Darmagi" or "What a pity." Gaja still calls his Cabernet bottling "Darmagi"! I don't think there's very much acreage planted to Cab or Merl...

Re: Parker's take on 2009 Bordeaux

I don't know how the preferred style of the critic affects typicity. I'm thinking more about a wine list in a restaurant, where you think you know what to expect when it says St. Estephe, Napa, or Margaret River. At the same time, when I think that way, I'm guessing that anyone ordering a Cos d'Esto...

Re: Bordeaux wines of the 1970s: NYC October 16, 2010

We'll miss you, David, and I was looking forward to what I could extract from your cellar in trade. :( We've always loved '75 Figeac and '75 Giscours -- just classic BWE wines -- so we'll bring both of those. Since we're taking two seats, we could add something like '70 Montrose or '70 Trotanoy. And...

Re: Parker's take on 2009 Bordeaux

Good point about the "star system", Alex. Have you noticed how many generations of movie stars have been children of movie stars? And I completely agree about typicity. In the mid-90's, the Barolo and Barbaresco producers that went "100% new barrique" may have still been making g...

Hi Alex! - the rating for Cos d'Estournel, which I thought overblown and seeking to impress, at the expense of the terroir I haven't tasted the Cos, and I can't begin to question your take on the wine, but I can't figure out why a wine can be denigrated in an absolute "what's in the glass"...

Re: Parker's take on 2009 Bordeaux

I can't begin to suggest what "everybody is trying" to do from a winemaking perspective in Bordeaux, and I can't pretend to suggest that '47 Cheval Blanc is any current winemaker's goal. I'm only suggesting that those wines were at least as far from every "experienced" taster's n...

Hmm,that's a valid take on Bordeaux, Werner, but by that standard we'd have dumped every bottle of '45 Mouton and '47 Cheval Blanc down the drain -- **untasted** -- because they were "out of pattern", right?

I think we're test-driving some "BWE" wines from the seventies in a few weeks.

Gail and I are all in - we're down to only 42 different Bordeaux from the 70's. But 75 Mouton is a strong opening bet, Ian.

Piling on...so many of the better wines from Bordeaux shut down from somewhere around age 4 to 8 and don't revive until somewhere between age 10 and 15 (or as much as age 25+ for some of the immortals) that tasting at age 6 to 9 just always seems an exercise in futility.
