Thanks for the comments, folks. I like Nic's approach, with both some fine wine vinegar and the knowledge that it would have been the 1900 Margaux had I had one !

I feel a bit like Joe Walsh... (life's been good to me so far) The 2000's are really hard to call, haven't tried that many and too early to tell (TETT) for the majority of interesting (to me) wines: 2009 - Actually had a New Zealand Sauv Blanc a couple of weeks ago...probably won't try any Beaujolai...

Gail and I celebrated her birthday a few weeks ago at Mannequin Pis, a terrific Belgian restaurant in Olney (probably the only decent eatery near our house!), but we celebrated again Saturday when both of our kids were home from school. I didn't say $100MMM to buy it...the question was "buy and upgrade", right?

So, $20MM to buy and $60MM to upgrade it to the state-of-the-art showplace that the stellar terroir deserves.

The other $20MM? Hazardous waste disposal fees for existing stocks...

what 08s are you buying? how much and from whom? Like voting in Chicago, I was thinking early and often. I've picked up Pichon Lalande, Duhart Milon, Clinet, Gazin, Clos Fourtet, Pavie-Macquin, and others. All of these estates seem to be on a roll over the last few vintages, and the pricing seemed ...

The eightie's are the years that are really a crap shoot for me. Not from personal experience, but from looking at reviews, I believe that a lot of the 3rd thru 5th growths really started to produce some great wine after 1989 but before that you really had to look mostly at 1st or 2nd growths to fi...

Regardless of sourcing, it's no surprise that two bottles of the same 20-year old wine show differently. The Champenoise have always exploited a "luxury goods" approach...have you ever encountered a wine seller who couldn't get a bottle of Dom for you by tomorrow? The only losers in the yield reduction agreement are the small growers who make their wine from grapes from their own vineyards. T...

My buying pattern is usually 7 (or 8 if I've heard the wine is drinking well young) to allow for an "In the name of science" bottle (or two) and six more for whenever I think and/or hear that the wine will have gotten to a good place. If you buy 4 bottles, you might drink one now (lots of ...

I was more thinking of the absurdly high percentage of corked and/or oxidized Spanish wines that I and many others have encountered. I was at one tasting/dinner where the most-generous host opened four bottles of an old vintage of Vega-Sicilia ('68? '70?) to get a sound one!

Yep, spoofulated to the max. I liked the '05 for what it was -- a good wine in a non-expectational way.

BUT, it's a function of what you want in a wine... It may not be classic Bordeaux, but it would be an interesting ringer in a high-dollar Napa cab tasting...
