Re: Points, scores, and ratings

I always interpreted "quite good" as "not quite good". Just watch a few BBC shows with the upperclass - quite is never complimentary. And the specific ranking of fine vs. good is a bit confusing. "It's fine" can often mean it's tolerable.

Another prime rib for Christmas dinner here! 1975 Giscours is still a wonderful bottle of wine, and 1987 Dunn Napa Cab matched beautifully with the beef.

Greetings from Ravello on Amalfi coast! We've been adventuring in southern Italy for a while, so I apologize for my tardy trip notes. I've always liked Coutet - less sweet than the norm but it makes up for it with complexity. They have always made up a significant portion of the dessert wines in our cellar, usually just a step behind Climens, a neighbor in Barsac.

Sad news from Bartholomew Broadbent

The trouble with having grown up in a wine family is that your parent's friends become your friends and then they start dying! Very sad to hear of the loss of another friend and icon, Count Alexandre de Lur Saluces, previous owner of the greatest white wine in the world, Château d'Yquem, then owner ...

Fevre and Louis Michel make up most of the Chablis in our cellar, too! Dauvissat and Raveneau could fit the same discussion as First Growth Bordeaux in another thread - they are clearly better but the difference in cost seems out of control. No doubt in my mind the price will increase significantly ...

We're fine with either menu option - the choices look great.

We'll bring a couple of whites (probably an "i Clivi" and something from Emidio Pepe) and an old Barolo from a Wasserman *** producer in a **** vintage.

Re: Poll: Is Latour Overrated?

Yes, Latour had a weak patch in the 1980's, the window of time that EVERYONE ELSE IN BORDEAUX GOT THEIR ACT TOGETHER!

Somehow, they made good wines through the 60's and 70's when most of the other FG's struggled.

So, no, Latour is not overrated.(IMMHO!)

Re: What is orange wine?

Gravner and Radikon are probably the two high priests. If you open the bottles and give them as much air as you might give a Barolo from the 50's or 60's, they become wonderful accompaniments to grilled fish or seafood stew. Usually not worth what's charged here. And it seems like a terrible choice ...

My gateway Burgs parallel jal's experience. In the late 70's and early 80's, Burgundy was indeed a minefield. But you could still buy well aged DRC, Leroy, Meo Camuzet, Vogue, and the like for barely more than current Bordeaux first growths and some upstart California cabs! Tasting '55, '59, '66, '6...

Five of the best wines I've ever had have been 1959 Lafite. (Try diagramming that sentence!) But I fear that additional tastings would underwhelm.

So my desert island wine would be 1985 La Tache.

Did NH typically buy in France during the first releases? Maybe their buyers couldn't get there, much like BWE'ers at the time?
