2019 Gloria

Popped and poured. I believe this was a mid-$30 purchase at Costco. Merlot, 34%, PV 4%, Cab, 62%. Medium purple robe, lightening at the edge. alcohol set at 14%. Initial nose of dark pit fruit, a floral quality, followed by slight herbal presence. No wood notes at the start. Very pleasant. First sip...

A quick follow-up note. I had another bottle to double check my first impression. This bottle was popped and poured with no decanting or slow oxygenation. I found the wine much lighter and fresher the first hour but as the evening passed the and the wine opened I found it got heavy and less interest...

2019 Ch. Siran

I saw Arv's post that 2019 Ch. Siran was at Costco for $25 a bottle; I thought I would venture into vintage 2019.  Sadly the Siran while a well crafted wine, was not the profile that I like. Siran is a blend of 47% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc.  The critics seem...

I had last 1/3 of a bottle last night and it tightened up and showed its tannic backbone. This is a wine of substance. I may have underestimated it aging potential. I think I'll return for a few more bottles. BTW the price was $40. Still it is a great value wine IMO.

2018 Haut-Bages Liberal.

I'm not a fan of the 2018s. It was a hot weather vintage and a little ripe for my tastes. Having said that, the ones I've had are well made, just a little over ripe. Which brings me to the 2018 Haut-Bages Liberal. I saw it at the big box store for $40 and thought I'd give it a try. I am not very fam...

I can't say it's the greatest ever, but it's the best of the 21st Century. 2016 is the last vintage that I'm cellaring. Anytime I see a 2016 I buy it. Today I bought Ch. La Dominique for $60.

A quick thought is we are seeing the end of another Napa Valley era. The first vintners were farmers and grape growers. Mondavi's, Krug, Sebastiani, and Martini. In the late 60's to mid-70s we saw the second migration. These were people who made a great deal of money in business and moved to Napa fo...

I saw the 2018 Ch. Corbin today at Costco for $39.00. Despite my reservation about 2018 I decided to test drive it. Corbin is 90% Merlot and 10% Cab Franc.
